ZVG question...

That's backspin. What kind of spinner are you using? Backspin can be caused by a few things, but is basically either your optipac or the fact you are using a serial port can't keep up with the spinner.

I have tried both a tempest like spinner (reproduction) and another (Oscar one, I think). No matter how slow I move it, this happens...

I can try a real tempest spinner to see if that make a difference...

I would blame it more on using the serial port. Those spinners all use the same amount of teeth and it isn't super high, but the serial port is slow.

Do you have another encoder that isn't using the serial port that you could try? Or IIRC, can you change the Optipac cable to use PS/2 instead? You may be able to change the poll rate as well to help.

I can try another encoder but not sure how it will work on DOS.

Not sure how to change the poll rate... with the mouse test program, its really smooth... strange...

I have not tried that one.

I have one of the older optipacs and it seems to work okay... need to do some more testing...

Its the sound that has me worried. Got it working, but some games are brutal with it...

so I got the sound working in most games... :)

The ones that were giving me issues were Tempest, MH, SW, etc.

Now Tempest, MH work nearly flawlessly. Star wars still has in issue with "may the force be with you", but that's not much of an issue as i will not have SW/ESB on the cab.

One thing that is strange is that if I let it boot right to the menu without doing anything, (the new menu), pressing any key will reset the computer. However, if I hit 'esc' on the "loading windows 95" screen, it works fine...

I chose to just use the existing wiring harness and built a loom to plug into that (for both controls and sound) from the ipac and PC speaker out. I've kept everything stock, that way I can switch it back to a real Space Duel in a few seconds. I used the AR2 to amplify the PC audio, and it works really well. I've uploaded a few pictures here;

P.S for the ESC key the ipac implements one by default. If you press P1 and P2 start at the same time it will send an ESC to the PC. For Space Duel I wired P1 and P2 start to the Start and Select buttons.

That's much more elegant (and cheaper!) than what I was planning. Here's the pin-out from MikesArcade: http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=pinout&page=SpaceDuel.txt

Where did you find the fingerboards with solder points?

i have some finger boards that can be cut down for this. I will post a picture. the nice thing is that they have through holes for the wires...

How did you connnect the sound to the AR-II?

Ahh, it looks like JAMMA fingerboards will work. 0.156 spacing with a key in position 7:

Here is my next question...

How do you get the warnings to not be displayed. For example, Omega Race complains that the cocktail version does not work. Speed Freak complains about the sound.

Is there a way to not have that displayed every time? Its fine when I am building it, but when the cab is done, I will not have the computer monitor hooked up.

Posting this question here in case its not seen on the artwork thread.

As you know, Space Duel has player 1 on the right, while most other games on the planet have player 1 on the left.

What do you guys think? Which should be the correct one?

Should I put Player 1 on the Right like space duel or on the left?

I can take a video of the menu tonight.

The control panel is not done yet...

cool... when I sold you that ZVG board I thought to myself... "I probably will kick myself for doing this"... I've a few boot marks on my rear.... especially after seeing the screen shot and the control panel.

I'm really glad it went to someone that actually has followed through with getting it going... It would probably still be sitting in the box if I still had it anyway.

Awesome work!

Thank you and thank you for selling me the board. :)

A bit late, but here is a short video (YouTube buchered the quality) of the Menu in action:

That menu looks much better than the "stock" one that came with the ZVG card.
Is that menu software available somewhere?
