Zoo Keeper!

What is your HS right now? Im a little over 200K, which is weak! The freaking game gets so damn hard once the Lions are around.

I hit 398K last night (by finally getting passed the 1st Lion stage. At 30K a pop, those bastards are worth some serious points if you can get them with the net at the end of the timer. 398K is still weak considering there are videos on YouTube of people doing 1,000,000 point jumps.

Zoo Keeper is my favorite game. I had one but I could never get it to work.

So, you just got rid of it? Why not try getting help to fix it? Especially if it was your favorite game?

As in 1 jump? :001_ssuprised:

Yeah dude, its crazy! I tried doing this exact same thing on this exact same level, but the animals didnt act this same way. This person (I wonder if he is on KLOV) "groups" them perfectly:

Keep practicing that method, it works...1&2M point jumps are common on this round once you get the technique right. At the very least you will get 120k & 250k jumps.

The way that he plays that moose stage, is the basic way of playing ALL the stages.

Geeze Jow... I've never given this game any thought... your energy level and excitement in your video makes me want one of these damned things now!!!!

Looks and sounds like a blast!

I can't say I have ever played the game. It's one sweet ass looking machine and tops to you for getting someting you enjoy.

Holy crap! :001_ssuprised::001_ssuprised::001_ssuprised: I never knew that many points for a jump was even possible. Is there a formula for how it calculates points per animal jumped or something? Take that Mario. Now we know who the real "Jumpman" is... :D

From John Morgan (one of the programmers):

I made the reward for jumping over animals based on how many animals you jumped over. For each extra animal I roughly doubled the score. This continued for as many animals there were maximum in the game (16ish or so?, it's been a long time :) So if you jumped a really massive number of animals you would get a gazillion points. But how do you get the animals to clump up for such a massive jump?

From StrategyWiki:

Number of animals jumped:

1 animal - 100 points
2 animals - 500 points
3 animals - 2000 points
4 animals - 6000 points
5 animals - 15,000 points
6 animals - 30,000 points
7 animals - 60,000 points
8 animals - 120,000 points
9 animals - 250,000 points
10 animals - 500,000 points
11 animals - 1,000,000 points

From StrategyWiki:

Number of animals jumped:

1 animal - 100 points
2 animals - 500 points
3 animals - 2000 points
4 animals - 6000 points
5 animals - 15,000 points
6 animals - 30,000 points
7 animals - 60,000 points
8 animals - 120,000 points
9 animals - 250,000 points
10 animals - 500,000 points
11 animals - 1,000,000 points

The rest of the progression looks like this:

12 animals - 2,000,000 points
13 animals - 4,000,000 points
14 animals - 8,000,000 points
15 animals - 15,000,000 points
16 animals - 30,000,000 points

30M point jumps are exceedingly rare and can be accomplished only by a very small handful of the top players. Hell, even 15M point jumps are rare, known for sure to have been accomplished only by three or four people at most. The acknowledged (verified) world record on Zoo Keeper is 35,732,870 by Shawn Cram. That performance is particularly stunning once you know that the biggest jumps in the game were two 4M jumps. The guy ran boards for nearly an hour and a half and reached the 64th stage. You can read the announcement and write up of the performance here.

By the way, badgamer is being coy with you. He's actually broken that score playing on MAME (with a 39M), and reportedly nailed a 30M jump in the process. Many of us are waiting to see if he ever pulls off more than one 30M jump in a game, submits it to Twin Galaxies, and proves that it's possible. There have been lots of claims over the years of 30M point jumps, some even claiming multiple 30M jumps in one game, but there has so far been no proof. It probably happened back in the early '80s, but since so few people thought to videotape their play back then (hell, few could afford a camcorder) we're still waiting to see the first 30M point jump captured on film (or MAME .inp).

I'm officially obsessed with getting a 1M point jump....

Damn, I couldn't get the animals to group together on the moose level like that video shows. I did manage a couple 30,000 point jumps though, so that was cool. That dude in the vid is freaking good, man. He sure makes it look easy. I guess I can't complain beings I've owned the game a total of 4 days. 398K is decent progress :D

You make it look ridiculously easy, too.

How long have you been playing that game for?

I played it for a summer back in 1983 when I was 7 and loved it. Then I found it again on a Taito Legends disk for the PC about 3 years ago. I've played it off and on over the last 3 years. It is one of my favorite games. I finally got a dedicated cabinet though it has a RAM issue (natch) right now so I haven't played it in some time. Plus it never seems to come up in any of the classic arcade tournaments so I never have an excuse to practice it more. My best is 7.8m which I've been stuck on for awhile now. I need to develop a good solid invisible board method I think that works 100% (or near it), but I've just been working on scores on other games lately so haven't been back to it. Your progress is quite good, keep at it and work on the grouping techniques.

Very impressive. I read that WR write up and it was said that the WR holder made it to stage 64 (which seems freaking insane!). How far into the stages have you got? I guess one could have a 2M+ score after about stage 7, but it doesn't seem 1M+ jumps just happen all the time? 7.8M has to be pretty good into the game, no?

I don't recall exactly because I've had a bulk of scores in the 6-7.5m range and I just can't seem to get over that hump into the 10m club so I don't recall the details of the 7.8m exactly. I do remember, I was playing doubles with the wife and being disappointed because we thought the score was higher (millions digit only shows during your name entry upon finishing your game, lord knows why since you can get at least 1m on one jump but I digress)...I imagine that since I've never had more than a 2m point jump that it was a few loops through the grey 4 net boards but I don't remember how many.

PS: My wife's best is over 500k which leads me to believe she is the best female ZK player on the planet. For awhile when I first got the cab we were playing it after dinner every night and I showed her some grouping techniques and how to play the bonus stage(s) and off she went. It's the only game besides Tetris she likes and I love her madly.

Ill have to see if I can get my wife into this game. She loves Dr Mario, but thats all she plays. Oh wait, she also likes Food Fight a little bit :)

Food Fight is all kinds of awesome. I cried when Richie sold his and held on to the leg of the customer pleading "Take the Rootbeer Tapper instead...PLEASE!" to no avail.
