i've had my zoo keeper running for about a week now and man is it addictive. i keep wanting to play to see how big of a point jump i can get. its by far the best game i own. top score right now is only 250k but i'm getting better quickly.

too bad no new sideart, marquees or bezels are available to finish off my cab.

are any other taito games this fun, jungle hunt or elevator action?

Elevator Action is pretty fun. Qix can be fun if the gameplay is to your liking. Not a big fan of Jungle King.

I think the most fun Taito game (possibly excluding Zoo Keeper) is Ice Cold Beer.

Zoo Keeper is an awesome game.

The key to scoring high in Zoo Keeper is to jump as many animals as you can at one time. If you jump enough of them, you can get a 30M point jump (I've never done it, but I've seen it done). Keeping them caged up is ok, but it won't get you the high scores you want.

One of the tricks is to get as many animals as you can going the same direction. To do so, when they escape they will head in the opposite direction of what the player is facing.

So at the beginning of the round go to either the left or right corner and stand there while a bunch of the animals escape. They should all go the same direction.

If you can, use the net to regroup the animals again. Throw them back in the zoo, then go stand in a corner while they all re-escape, they should all be closer together.

jungle hunt interests me as well as ICB or ZP....just hit 650k on zoo keeper...looks like i'm going to need to make a taito row..

If you really want to practice jumps and get your technique down, adjust the game settings and set your lives to the max. You can get to the higher stages and really practice the higher scoring jumps like 1 million. Or you could also make Zeke invincible, but then you can't really tell if you got hit during a jump.

Jungle Hunt and Elevator Action were fun back in the day, but they are too repetitive now. Though I do like the marquee and bezel for Jungle King. Qix is more fun to play long-term than those, in my opinion. Try them on MAME to see if these are games you would want to own.

Zoo Keeper is definitely my all-time favorite classic arcade game, and the first game I ever bought.

I bought it back in 2001 for 300$, which was great, but it was a 10-hour drive each way to pick it up! I figured I'd start with my 'grail' though!

I can consistently get 1M and 2M jumps, and have gotten a 4M a few times.

My best score is a little over 7.2 million.

My main problem is that I haven't memorized the pattern of the invisible platforms later on in the game. That's usually the screen that does me in!

All the Taito games of that era are insanely awesome.

Absolutely!

I really don't think they had a clunker in that era. Some of games (EA, JK), I burned myself out on - that's not a bad thing!

I recommend the 'spinner series' as well - Front Line (my fav.), Wild Western and Tin Star. Even some of the rarer gems are fun - Space Dungeon, Electric Yo Yo and Kram (very addicting)!

I played a Wild Western for the first time last week, that game is awesome. Was not for sale tho :( I did buy Zookeeper, can get 500k so far. Love the gameplay. Beautiful artwork on it too.

Zookeeper is easily top 5 arcade games of all time. That's the one I will NEVER sell.

zookeeper has been a huge hit in my house.

I never saw one bitd - anyone know if they were popular back then? I'd never even heard of it until folks here were raving about it.

i never saw one bitd...i never played one in a arcade or in mame...i bought it from all the hype here on klov and it was well worth it..

The game didn't come out until late 1982, so they only sold a few thousand as far as anyone can tell. I only saw one BITD, but it made a big impression on me and I rediscovered it 20 years later.

I have had a Zoo Keeper for a year now and the freaking game hasn't worked for a single second of that time. I have the boards sent out for repair and hope to join the ranks of addicted soon. :)

I played this game at collectors houses but never saw it in the wild. Zoo Keeper is a blast!

Yeah, I had never even heard of Zoo Keeper until I started going to CAX. I didnt really get to play it until CAX 2010, and I knew I had to find one. I found one shortly thereafter and played the shit out of it until the monitor took a dump. Since then I moved (twice) and am finally looking at getting this thing back up and running. My (then 2 1/2 year old) loves it, too -

i had the same problem...i had repaired known working boards but they didn't work in my cab even with a switcher....replaced all the pins with new .156 pins and it gave me video and sound...

Always loved zookeeper.

been promoting it and hyping it up since 1999 :)

You can find old arcade information on the newsgroups still (rec.games.video.arcade.collecting and rec.games.video.arcade.marketplace)

Never saw one in the wild, and never played it until it came out in the last ArcadeSD update. That one game makes the ArcadeSD worthwhile. It is easily the most played game in our house.

I've encountered ZK twice back then. Once at my local arcade and the other was I believe at a Ben Franklin. I can't vouch for the popularity of the latter location. (But, every time I went there no one was playing.) The arcade I used to play it, it was semi-popular. I recall it being a hit w/ me and the chicks.

I really think the popularity escalated within the past couple of years.
