I'm recapping a Zenith CD-19MRF06 19" monitor and need some wisdom. The chassis is model 9-227-01 (the -01 version). Cap c3254 calls for a 22uf 16v polarized in the parts list, but a NP cap came out of it. Even the chassis is not designated for a polarity whereas other caps are.

I also have the reverse situation in some cases where a polarized cap came out but a NP is listed as correct.

What would you do? Can a NP go in a polarized location, and/or can a polarized replace a NP?

Thanks in advance!

A NP can replace a polarized cap, don't try to replace a NP with a polarized cap though. If you are confused on what direction the polarized cap should face you will have to look at the manual and follow the traces to figure it out.

I think I'm gonna start by replacing what was on the board first.... in this case even the schematic shows a NP in this position.... wow. Tough to fix stuff when the manual, schematic and cap kit all say different things.

It is not really all that unusual for there to be different schematics for the same board. It likely went through some revision and that is why the schematic and manual you have don't match. To help identify which part you should have installed look at the surrounding components and cross check them with the manual and schematic. One is bound to be more correct than the other.

Of course, the easy thing to do is just replace one for one - as long as the chassis was working before you started it should still function after you are done.

I have the same monitor and it's got a bad case of vertical collapse. I was looking into a cap kit as well. How many caps are wrong in the kit from bob roberts? And does anyone know if a chassis swap is available for this dog? Also, I have a 25 zenith tube from my WG-k7197, can I test my 19" tube with the chassis from the 25" ? I wonder if my Kortek chassis will work with it...
Thanks!

Well Alf, it depends on what version of board you have. In all fairness to Bob Roberts, his kit is very close considering the board variations, plus what mods & updates have been made at the factory before shipping. You may have to pick up two or three caps at your local supply house.... but probably a 10uf 100v NP, a .47uf 50v NP, a .47uf 50v polar if you have the -1 version of the board.
