Ok, I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I've never played Zelda OoT. That being said, I own both the N64 version and the new 3DS version. I figure the 3DS version has better graphics, but the N64 version will be more true to the original (and playing on a console > handheld IMO). So which one would be the best experience for my first play through?

The 3ds version is nicer looking and more feature rich, but can you enjoy an entire playthrough on that tiny screen? Can't answer that one for you.

Both are great. I would play the 3DS version, I think it's just a more polished look. You won't be missing much if you don't play the original. But this is a game you must play, especially if you're a Zelda fan!

Both are great in their own ways. I beat it on the N64, and I'm halfway through the 3DS version (albeit I haven't played it in months.) The 3D effect is great, and the game plays well in small chunks of time. The graphics are much improved as well in the 3DS, and aiming the hookshot by moving the system around in first person mode is surprisingly accurate. Since the story is the same no matter which you choose, you'll be in for a treat regardless.

I have both and have beaten both.

As great as the original is, the 3DS does nothing but improve on it. I would love to say how much I love the N64 version, and I do, but it hasn't aged too well. It's one of those earlier 3D games, so it's not as polished as it could be.

For the 3DS the controls are excellent, the graphics are much smoother. The game has a much better frame rate. It's everything great about the original improved.

I have picked up the original and played it recently, so my memory of it is pretty fresh.

Bump, anyone with both versions care to weigh in?

I have both. Since you haven't played the game on any platform then I have to suggest playing it on the 3DS for your first time. Better graphics definitely and the game play experience is pretty much the same as playing the N64 version so you're not missing anything from the N64 except inferior graphics and the original fire dungeon music that has some Muslim chants (if you have the gold N64 cart/early release).

Orrrrr download it and play it on your wii! I have all the best zelda games saved on my wii ;)

I've got it on N64, Gamecube, Wii, and 3DS. I've also downloaded the HD mod for emulators on PC.

I have never completed the game once. I think you had to beat it back in the day or it's hard to enjoy now - as mentioned, it just hasn't aged well at all. The concept of the game, the expansiveness, all of that was impressive by 1998's standards, but it's nothing new now.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy what I played of it, I just never understood the hype. I got to the fire temple when I first had it on N64 (preordered gold cartridge), but because I missed my chance to get the horse, I had to run everywhere. It quickly got old, then a few friends who finished it told me the ending sucked, so I never finished it.

I've since tried to play it several times, on multiple platforms, and I just can't do it. If I do eventually play it through all the way, it'll likely be on 3DS or the HD mod on PC (probably on my media PC that's hooked in to my TV with an N64 USB controller). At least those look presentable by today's standards.

Sorry, the 32 and 64 bit eras just didn't hold up well for me :(

You could probably get the Dolphin emulator, and run the special edition of OoT that came with pre-orders of Wind Waker, and play them in 1080p. :)

I never should have sold those things.

I have never played any Zelda game, I never like rpg or most platformers other than the original one "DK".:)
