I keep putting Zaxxon on my "list", then taking it off again. I played the poop out of it on the Colecovision when I was a kid, but not that much in the arcades. I loved the gameplay then, but I was wondering how well it stands up today. How's the replay value? Aside from a really ugly cabinet with a pretty sweet stick, are there other things to love about Zaxxon?

Me too..

I played that game like crazy in the arcades when I was a teen...

I bought one two years ago that was Home Use Only and in great condition. I kept it for a year. I played it all the way through one time and then it sat in my garage for 9 months without being played. Even when we had a party I found Zaxxon not being played...

Now I have it on my multi-cocktail and will play it about once a year to get my "fix"...

That's been my experinence with it! (oh, and the fact that the cab was HEAVY AS HELL...LOL)

Take it easy

Jess

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for sharing your experience! Funny how some games lose their appeal over the years.

I am not a fan personally. Richie K has one in the arcade here and it used to sit near the Bosconian which I play often and every now and again someone would hop on Zaxxon, last a few seconds, then kinda stare confused and walk away. I enjoy.

It was one of the first games I played so Nostalgia wise it's a keeper for me. If you find one for cheap add it in to the rotation. If you get sick of it you can always sell it. Oh and don't collect games based on if other people play them, that's a sure fire way to not get a lot of games you want yourself. You think anyone plays Krull or Cloak and Dagger at my parties???? NOPE.

i couldn't wait to get one all i thought about was "i gotta have a zaxxon" then i played one at my friends house for 30 mins. i was thinking glad i don't own one! so there!

Damn, no love for Zaxxon. Well, I don't own one but it's still on my list. Hope to one day find a mint/near mint one with wood grain.

Zaxxon was a graphical marvel when it first came out. It was INSANE graphics-wise. The gameplay gets boring though... very boring. That said, I'll still play it from time to time via MAME. It's certainly not a keeper for me, though I will say playing on MAME vs playing the real thing is night and day (unless you have a nice flight stick on your mame).... no real comparison.

Super Zaxxons the one to get. Red flight stick and fasted pace. Again ,one to get for nostalgia reasons...not what people play. I wish I didn't sell my Super Zaxxon. Moving that cabinet gave me an umbilical hernia Ha !

I got one and love it, it gets played but I don't care if anyone else plays it or not, I like it and I got one.

tough to control. i always die right away. only played on mame and 48-in-1 though so i assume it has a special joystick.

Thanks for all the great opinions! Zfcamaro, you've got a good point about collecting for yourself. I think I would ideally mix some for me, and some for the homies. Sounds like what I should really do is find one somewhere and play it for a while. I'm heading to the KC auction Saturday--maybe one will turn up!

Zaxxon seems very similar to Scramble and Super Cobra type games to me. If you like them, you probably like Zaxxon. Zaxxon gives you the cool Quasi 3D which was the bomb-diggity in '82.

Collect the dedicated games you love. Put in a $200 MAME cab for everyone else.
