You won't believe what I found in my Berzerk boards today!!!

Hey Guys,

So I've got a SLEW of speech boards from when I was trying to get my um . . . first . . . Berzerk machine to have working speech. I spent I think 6 weeks working on it. During that time I bought every single Berzerk VSU-1000 speech board I could get my hands on.

Well the problem turned out to be a wiring issue and not a board issue. Once I did that, I had 6 speech boards, turned out 4 were good and 2 were bad . . . or at least I thought two were bad.

Well I was going back over my stash of Berzerk stuff and decided to test the two dead boards again, one just does nothing, so yeah its dead. The other boots up and some strange noise comes through the speaker but this time I kind of recognize it. Same as last time. I just thought something on the board was bad.

Decided to play a game with it. The board is good, there is nothing wrong with it. Its just in GERMAN!!!!

I don't know if this is original, I can't remember WHERE I bought it from, but I dumped the roms with my Batronix BX32 programmer and did a rom compare with MAME to the German MAME set and sure enough it was a perfect match!!!!

So somehow I ended up with a German VSU-1000. Not sure how I managed that, but I really don't even know if its original or if someone before me put the german roms on it, but I think its just about the neatest thing in the world!!!

I'll post a video of it on youtube later tonight!

That is really random I think that it's strange that some how you just got that!
COOL

Yeah I couldn't believe it when I finally figured it out. The EPROMs looks strange to me, they are white with gold legs. Again I have no idea if they are original or not, and I wish like nothing else I could remember where I found this board, I think it was ebay doing a "Stern pcb" search that I came across it. I just can't remember!!!

Nice...that is pretty funny...

I took German in high school wonder how much I will understand...

I would love for you to take a look at the video and see if you understand any of it, I'm working on editing it at the moment.

Played two games of Berzerk with German speech and ended up getting 68,460 on my 2nd game, which was my 3rd best game ever! So a great night for Berzerk all around!!!

AFAIK it is known that there was at least the German ROMs and I think Spanish is rumored to exist.
I also believe the German voice ROM is also available in MAME ?

I have heard Wizard of Wor in German and although I can understand German VERY well, I could not understand a single word of that. My friend Ully (who owns it and is German) had to explain me what it was saying.

The problem is that those voice chips were created with (American) English in mind since it was the main market, and thus the sounds they produce are for that language and often poorly "convert" to another language.

I think the Berzerk voice chip generally sound better than the WOW/Gorf one, so this maybe better in German too.

If you consider selling that board or maybe make a copy of the ROMs (if they are not available in MAME already) I am sure Superully would love it.

Where do I find the video ?

Awesome.

Und now ve dance.

Hey Guys,

Here's the video. It's actually my second game I played last night, which I got 68,460, even though the game started off really poorly, lost my first life before 2,000 points!

Pfffeoooooeee....

Yeah I really think we need native German speakers to analyze this.

It seems to say "Einsturm" when Otto enters, but I don't think that's a real German word.

When you leave a screen with all robots hit it seems to say:
"Es ist ein getroffen" which doesn't seem to make much sense either.

It also says "Achtung es its feindling" which is more or less "Attention it is foe (fiend)"

It sounds to me that someone with an English to German dictionary translated this BITD....it's like Gerrish... ;)

Yeah I agree. My dad actually speaks German fluently and I tried getting him to listen to the game over the phone, but it just wasn't coming over the phone clearly enough. I'm going to get him to watch my youtube clip to see if you can piece any of the phrase together.

Also I might try recording a clearly version of that video. Now that I'm thinking about it I'll do that this evening.

It would be great if you can up the video quality on youtube a bit. The sound is rather muffled. Maybe just keep the camera near the speaker, the video is not that important for this...

I found Berzerk German Speech MAME ROMs so I was right about that being about....

I have been thinking about creating a Dutch version but that is probably when ALL my cabs are completely restored...

The "only" thing you have to know is which phonemes to send after each other and create the correct combinations in the EPROM..... :p

I actually know a guy who owns a german version Berzerk board set. I did play it at his place last year.

Just checked. He actually dumped the german version in MAME from this very board set!

Cool :D

Ah, now we know where the German MAME version comes from.

It's just the EPROM chip on the voice board that needs to be changed, nothing else (maybe dip-switches for the on-screen language....can't remember....

Since I link the German language to one of my favorite bands (Kraftwerk, I always bought the original German versions because I feel it fits better to the music)) I think it's great to hear those robot-sounding speech in German :)

Now we still need to find the Spanish one...

Ah Kraftwerk: "Wir sind die Roboter..." :-]

Yeah I was messing with it a little more last night, it appears the only difference is the roms, I swapped some english roms in there and they work fine as well.

If anyone is interested I can make them german eproms for their VSU-1000 boards! I can program the 2716 eproms now.

When I first got that board, I had my old programmer, not my BX32 Batupo II that I have now, so I read the roms and saw that they didn't match the ones available with MAME. At the time if I could have, I was going to just erase them and then put the english on them, I thought the programming on the chips had just gone back because there are no stickers on the EPROMs. I can't tell you how much I'm counting my blessing now that I didn't have a programmer at the time that could do 2716 EPROMs!!!!!
