Got my parts back yesterday and decided I wanted to apply my yoke overlay on my star wars controller. Problem is one side doesn't want to stick for some reason. I'm hoping the experts will have a suggestion on how to get this sucker to lay flat and quit popping up.

What kind of finish is on your yoke cover?

hmmm... usually this sort of thing happens when the finish has a slight texture to it... the texture prevents the decal from laying flat against the surface and then weakens the bond of the adhesive.

Is your overlay new?

Yes brand new and it looks great except this one issue. Could I just use a glue stick on the stubborn part maybe hit it with a heat gun for a few seconds?

I would be apprehensive to use the heat gun... if you do try it, use it against the inside, against the bare steel not against the overlay and from a safe distance.

Is there any irregularities on the surface where its not sticking? Compared to where it is?

Not really the finish looks good and wasn't textured. The material is pretty stiff I have it weighted down right now maybe if I let it sit long enough it will stay down?

Yeah, I do recall the overlay being very rigid. If you heat up the cover a little that may help relax it a bit. Or get it on there and put a book on it or something for a couple of days.

I wouldn't use a heat gun! If anything I would start with a hairdryer on a low setting. I was thinking of using that on one of my cpo's that doesn't want to stick at a bend point. If you do find something that works let me know.

put it in the sun for a bit to warm the metal and overlay. Once the overlay gets flexible, put some weight on the piece and allow to cool slowly.

seeing hes in MN he may have to wait a while on the sun and heat :D

First you should ALWAYS clean/wipe your parts with some alcohol
(not the rubbing or drinking kind)
2nd the application should also always be done in a warm eniviroment.
never apply cold or to a cold surface heating the metal prior will also help.
( not too hot you should still be able to handle it without getting burned)

Now for the part that is not sticking as stated above you can heat it
from either side. If not from both sides to heat the metal a little as well
particularly at the bends will make it more flexibile.
once in place get some pads and clamp it down to form.

Good tips thanks I didn't even think of using clamps. As far as the quality of the overlay their top notch highly recommended!

I actually bought a bag of 20 clamps and I still have it clamped going to wait one more day and see where Im at.

Hey Deadpool, I can get you a stickier adhesive if that needs to be done... (3M 9471LE) Depending on the size you need, I can mail that to ya, you can take the overlay off, apply this adhesive sheet (2-sided peel off) and that will stick like crazy, even to a rougher surface. Just PM/lemme know if this interests you.

And, it will be damn near impossible to ever remove again...
