Hi there, if you've read my other Op Wolf threads or what not, you might know that I had power supply issues, which resulted in me purchasing two. Well, few months later they finally came in (thank you dirtcheaptrading for the wait). Either way, I plug in the first power supply, I can't even get it to 5 VDC, screen comes out garbled. I try the second one and managed to get it to the afaik correct voltage of 5.1 VDC. Everything turned on, no problem...except
No sound and no gun, mind you this was working prior to the old PS dying. It's been sitting there just waiting, nothing was touched.
Now, there is a hum coming out of the speakers, when I play with the volume knob, the hum gets louder or goes down in volume, this leads me to believe that it has to do with the sound board. Where would be the best place to test voltage on the board? Does the sound board have anything to do with the gun? It registers in test mode, as far as I know.
Any help would be great. :)

Bump in the night?
Additional news. The Power supply is showing 5.1 with just AC plugged in. When machine is powered on it drops to 4.78. Checked on main PCB and sound PCB. Both checked through the jacks plugging in to the board, is this right or should it stay at 5.1, if so where could I be losing power?

compare the old versus the new. make sure you have ti wired properly.

Im not sure about op wolf but alot of games used -5 to help with audio, if your new supply does not have -5 that could be the issue. Have you gone through and measured all your voltages not just the +5? check them all +5, -5,+12, etc.

I've checked the +5 and +12. Haven't checked the -5. Ill do that in the morning.
I have compared the two new ones versus the old one. Other than how they were made..they're pretty much the same. I thought maybe I had AC live and neutral hooked up wrong, but that shouldn't matter, as AC doesn't have a direction, am I wrong in this?
Old PS had just AC in and AC in. Where as the new ones specify live and neutral. I hooked up those as they corresponded to the old ps.

Couple things

1. You can hook the a/c up either way, no big deal

2. The reason the 5 drops with the board plugged in is because the board is a 'load' on the line. That's normal, you'll probably have to turn the power supply up a little bit.

3. Sound runs off 12v or -5, but it's never (usually) very picky about it. A sound amp a lot of times will run off as little as 8 volts. So you dont' need those two voltages to be exact, just 'there'.

4. Operation Wolf pcbs suck, and fail quite often. Your power supply could have spiked or something when it went bad, and fried the board. I once had 6 Operation Wolf PCBs and couldn't get any of them to work even with swapping parts and sound boards back and forth.

Thanks for the reply :)
So my basics in electricity is correct with the AC. Great.
The main PCB seems to load up and work fine, just seems like the sound PCB is screwy. Which is why it makes me wonder if the sound has anything to do with the gun. Looking at the wiring and the schematics I really can't tell.
Once again, strange that it all worked well with the old PS.
Still have to check the -5 in the morning, does that deal with the gun as well and sound. Lol.

Ok so I double checked the voltages on the ps'. All but the -5 Tested ok, well on the one power supply. The other couldn't get the voltage past 4.98 or 11.87 and nada on -5.

So I took one power supply apart, it reads 24V on the board where the outside sticker says -5V. There is a capacitor slot open...most likely for that line, I didn't bother tracing.
So it eithers a converted board or someone thought they wouldn't need -5...
Either way, is there somehow I can cross some wires from the +5 to the -5 side .. along with the ground for that particular section?
Is there anything I can do to provide my own -5 Voltage?
Thanks in advance. :)

Helpful,
I just wasted $56 on these, might not seem much, but it's a piss off. I would like to know how to band-aid this before I get a proper fix.
I'm gonna see if some of parts can be put in the old PS, revive that sucker.

Get another power supply.

If you do that, make sure you test it before you plug anything in. If you send the wrong voltage down any of those three lines your board will be toasty.

Lol will try in the morning, had a busy day helping the mom.
I was thinking of using the 115 vac from the switching power supply and the +12 +5 -5 and G from the atx power supply. I tested the voltages on the atx today and come up with 5.28 and 12.20 as well as -4.86 . I'm hoping these are OK.

Are you talking switching power supplies? If so, it should have solved your problem.

I would start tracing all the wires and make sure none are creating shorts etc. And nevermind the "it was working before with the older power supply" this game is one of the most problematic I have ever come across.Trust me, I know because I own one that took a lot of work to get going. Nothing is out of the question with this game.

Oh and one more thing. The -5v line supplies the sound for the game and the sound PCB houses the connector for the gun. Start measuring voltages there too.

Good luck :)

Thanks so much for the answer I was really looking for. :)
The sound and gun are related.
I traced the problem to the new ps' not providing the -5 voltage. Now while I'm waiting for a new PS to arrive, most likely few weeks.
So that's why I'm trying to use a PC atx or at supply, with proper negative voltage.
Thanks so much for the encouraging words and the sound gun association. :)

Thanks for the manual too, I have my paper version, but I see it's missing a few pages, like the electronic drawer diagram, I just had the cabinet.

Either way, I slapped in an ATX ps from old pc. I'm only using the -5 from the mobo connector. I have the pc supply shorted on PS_ON, made a cable that hooks up to the 115V on the switching power supply. So both power supplies turn on at the same time. They have a common ground, everything seems to work ok, up to a point.
The gun now registers on the screen, I can play like normal, except for the sound. No more hum from the speakers, or anything else, dead silence...
I don't want to believe that the sound board is dead...I really don't, but I might have to face the reality. At least the gun works, that was half the puzzle.
Thanks for the help :)

You are very welcome :)

Here's a link that should help you. Scroll to page 17 and you will find an overview of the sound board that shows you where each connector and wiring goes to.

That sucks :(

Do all the other voltages check out okay? This stupid game is so finicky and needs proper voltages for everything to work properly. It's also possible that the dying power supply could have shorted the sound board as well. Anything is possible, really. I have a couple of boards that have problems. You are welcome to them and see if you can get a sound board going.

Yeah, everything else seems to check out ok, voltages are there, this has been a hell of a fight lol. It's not over yet though, if you're willing to part with a board or two I can attempt to fix it... I really miss "You are finished....here"
Let me know what you're looking to get for them :) Appreciate the help.

I have been wrestling with about 5 sets of these boards and not making much progress, yes I feel your pain.
