Well, here's the issue.

Doing some searching of the forum I found an older post that suggested this fix from a similar looking screen.
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=186540

I do have Mike Doyle's 96in1 multipac in this, been running fine for months.
I did replace the older ribbon cable when I did the multipac, so I'm assuming that's fine.

From that other thread, I'm lead to believe that I should replace the 2114 ram at position 4N.
Does this sound like an acceptable resolution? I don't have any parts so I've got to do an order if there is in fact a bad IC somewhere.

I tried booting it with the test switch on, but that just made it stop moving, and look a little different (see picture attached).

Thanks for any help!

Steven

Messed with the connector.

Then I turned on test mode, and saw the same garbage for a bit, then I saw a "MEMORY OK" message, then more garbage, then it stabilized. I turned it off, then back on. Saw the full test menu with MEMORY OK and all the Ms Pacman dip settings settings. Turned test switch off and reset the system.

Saw the Multipac screen, played half a game of pacman, and then suddenly the screen went back to garbling and funny noises again.

I suppose this means edge connector?

Sbc is in there good. I could pull it and try to clean the legs i suppose

Part of me just wants to order the jrok replacements for the two extender cards.

It tends to work sporadically. I see on the forums that ppl also replace the fuses (I've got original ones in there). All are good and none look burned or anything. Would you guys still recommend replacing those as well?

In fact, the internals are all original, including power supply and wiring. Should I check anything else?

It's not the fuses on Pac/Ms Pac but rather the fuse holders.

If you have the original brass fuse holders they get weak and don't make tight contact wtih the fuses. They also corrode which makes it even worse.

You can get replacements at Radio Shack but for a quick check if that's the issue you can always scrape or sand the insides of 'em then give 'em a bit of a squeeze before putting the fuses back in.

Just make sure you unplug the game before monkeying around with them.

sorta fixed

Well, I've done the following:

- replaced fuse holders with new radio shack one's
- replaced fuses
- bought replacement sbc and vram chips (jrok) to replace original daughter boards
- firmly reseated my 96in1 multipac, ensuring z80 and new ribbon cable were good.
- general cleanup of the board

It now sorta works. My main issues are that when I go to open the coin door to coin-up, the game will reset!!!

Any ideas on this one? How likely is some kind of short in the coin door/lights/whatever causing the game to reset? All the wire looks good to me, I don't see any kind of metal. Does anyone have a picture of what an original Ms Pacman coin door hooked up looks like?

I've got a metal grounding strip coming off the test switch casing that's cut off (i.e. going nowhere), so the whole thing may not be grounded. Also, there's a spare power molex and a random wire that's electrical taped going to nothing. I'll post a picture of what I'm talking about later, as I'm at work now and can't take a pic.

Sounds like the slam switch is closing causing it to reboot. Check the switch, its mounted on the backside of the coin door lock. If its too close bend it out some.

totally

That totally worked! Thanks so much!
Now she's back to working flawlessly again!
