I picked up my first donkey kong yesterday. Its solid but has monitor issues. It has the original sanyo in it. The tube has zero burn! But it needs a cap kit as the pics show. It also has humming and other noises in the speakers. So do I need to recap the sound portion on the chassis also or is this something cause this noise? Someone carved their name into the bezel. So I am looking for one of those. Control panel has the usual cig burns on it.

Not sure if it would be worth it or not. The scratches are fairly deep. Looking around at repo bezels has anyone ordered one from arcadeshop.llc? Was wondering about the quality of it compared to the original.

I saw two DK UR's in my collecting history (don't know why so few around here) but both of them had some douche-bag's name deeply gouged into the bezel. Plexi bezel is just asking for that sort of abuse I guess.

On a completely unrelated note, Chrome browser spell check wanted to change douchebag into Doubleday, making my wife's iPhone look positively brilliant by comparison.

DK

Cap kit should clear up the monitor. You can find the bezel & cpo online easy enough. Until then novus polish them.

Nice find & good luck with it!

Yeah, it comes with the territory.

For the last couple of months I've been trying to get details on how to color match the colors on my Donkey Kong bezel which has someone's initials scratched in it.

But there are no standards for paint and process, so I'm still trying and it looks like it'll be trial and error.

(It would have been great if there was as paint code data base and a standard way to measure out what was needed for touching up).

Nice pickup!

Original buttons on the CP - save those - they're not easy to find.

Bezel: it's reverse printed, so you can hit it hard with abrasives (start at 600 grit) and work back to 2000 wet/dry, then move through Novus 3, then 2, then 1. The scratch(es) should come out no problem.

Monitor: you don't need a cap kit, you just need a single cap. I forget which one, but I'll double check my documentation and get back to you.

Awesome thanks for all the tips guys. I have a cap kit on the way from bob. I never worked on a Sanyo before so is there anything I need worry about.

You can get those scratches out completely with about 30 minutes of elbow grease and a trip to Wal-Mart. Novus won't take anything out that's deep enough to catch your fingernail on, and those look deep so you need to start with paper.

Go to the auto dept. at Wal-Mart and buy a pack of 600 grit, 1200 grit, and 2000 grit sandpapers. Use them dry starting with the 600 and sand till the scratch is gone and your fingernail no longer catches on it. The plex will look like wax paper, but don't worry.

Next go with the 1200 and smooth the area to a consistent burnish, removing the marks from the 600 grit, then move to the 2000 and do the same, removing the marks from the 1200.

Now you're ready for Novus 3, use that first then move to Novus 2 and buff till it looks new.

I've done this on many plex bezels, especially Atari stuff and as long as the art is okay, there's no reason to replace it. I've also used a torch to flame polish after the 2000 paper instead of Novus, but that's risky unless you have plenty of practice.

I solved this problem two days ago. If the scratches are in the non-painted areas you can buff them out. Go to walmart and buy the MOTHER'S headlight restoration kit with powerball. It has a buffing wheel thing that goes in a drill along with six steps of sandpaper and buffing compound. The whole thing took about twenty minutes and my DK bezel no longer has some douchebags initials in it. The kit is about $20.00. The bezel looks NOS, beautiful. I did the headlights on two cars, three bezels and used only about half the compound.

Regardless of the bezel, DK is always a good score. Get ready to be spending a lot of time with it. You'll be amazed how quickly your score will improve. Congrats.

I do have the mothers ball and compound. I'll try it this weekend and take some pics. I think the buttons are trashed. The blue has melt marks from cig burns and the orange is beat pretty bad. Thanks for all the tips!!

this never works for me...*sigh*

I also have a slight wahwahwah coming from the speaker during attract mode. I replaced the transistors at Q4 and Q6 with no change. Not sure what to change out next to try to fix this. My cap kit came from bob so I'll recap the monitor and audio as well and hope that helps but I think I'll still have the wahwahwah noise.
