yes, another Tempest question.. what would YOU do?

As many have seen from my prior posts, I brought a dead, but complete, Tempest home at the end of September. I was able to bring it back to life, only to have the flyback blow up after 1 day of getting to play it. The real killer is, during that day, both my wife and daughter became hooked on the game..

Because I am on a ridiculously tight budget at the moment, I have managed to order the flyback and HV rebuild parts from Bob Roberts. I also ordered the "additional parts" kit. What I do not yet have funds to order is the LV2000 (another 36 bucks). I want to, but I have to sell a few other game parts before I can make that happen.

Here's the question: the Bob Roberts parts might possibly be here tomorrow.. I want to start working on them ASAP. The question is, after I get those parts installed, am I running with the Devil if I power the game back up for the wife and daughter to play, without having done the LV2000 install yet? I plan to buy the LV2000 in the next month if all goes well, but we are all going crazy not being able to play Tempest, as it's sitting right dead in the middle of the garcade!

Please tell me what you would do.. If it were just me alone missing it, I could probably hold off till the LV arrived. But the needs of the many, outweigh, the needs of the few.. (or the one) :D

I say go for it. As I understand it, when the LV circuit goes bad, it only takes out other things in the LV circuit. Since you're getting the LV2000 anyway, might as well take your chances. But be careful, a bad LV section can start fires, I have seen it.

Hopefully others will chime in if I'm talking out of my ass.

I can't say for sure if you should wait, as I have an LV2000 sitting in a bag in my basement that I have not installed in mine yet, so I guess like Van Halen, I am running with the devil.

Not knocking Bob at all, as he is a great guy, but I bought my LV2000 from Arcadeshop and it was $29 I believe. Not a huge difference, but it will save you a few bucks (not sure about the shipping cost difference) if you go that route.

There are lots of WG's running out there without LV2000 kits. Not having it doesn't cause problems, it just makes problems less likely and limits the damage if a problem occurs.

I bought a LV2000 for my 6100 equipped SW years ago and have never installed it. I suppose I will when the monitor needs a cap kit, or something.

Thanks guys, that makes me feel tons better. I was waiting for someone to say "if you install those new parts and don't install the LV2000 right away, you better be ready to buy all of those parts all over again!"

That makes me feel much safer. Now if I could just feel as confident in the Postal Service LOL

One thing to consider is that the LV kit eliminates the need for more than a few of the resistors and transistors that are in Bob's kit. So if you install the full Bob kit now, you'll have to uninstall several of the aforementioned items to install the LV kit.

Not a huge deal or anything, but just letting you know...
