Yeah, Red Tents, what about upright dual Vs. machines?

Back in the day, I can remember having seen a couple of upright Vs. dual machines, mostly containing SMB and Excitebike. I always thought those huge cabinets were really cool. I would still like to have one but I am not a fan of the Red Tent. Am I the only one?

I considered getting a Dual Upright, but I thought the shape kind of awkward. You could also get two Vs. Unisystem conversion cabs and put them side by side. That would also be easier to move.

I'd probably take a Red Tent over the Dual Upright just because it's more compact.

Right now I have 2 Playchoice cabs and I use a Vs. pcb and control panel in one of them for Vs. Excitebike. I may set up both cabs for Vs. Balloon fight one of these days since I have the wiring harness from a Dual Upright.

Nope, I would prefer one of those cabinets over a Red Tent. Just that it is so large. But considering if I were to find a Vs. Dual before a Red Tent, I would probably go with the Vs. Dual Upright.

Back when Coin-Op Warehouse was in Hagerstown, they had several of these Dual Cabinets and one of the had a bunch of duals bolted together to form (IIRC) 10 of them.

Edit: I doesn't really matter to me, I just want to play those darn vs games! What's wrong with Tucson!? I found a guy once who had a whole bunch of Vs parts. He said he pulled them all from Red Tent Cabs that he had brought to the dump! There Was 8 of them I think.

I have seen one converted to Cyberball. Atari conversion kit specifically designed for that cabinet.

Usually when they come up for sale, they go pretty cheap because of the size and awkward shape. In reality, a red tent will probably use up more floor space when you factor in the chairs needed, or at least the room required to play the game.

I own both. I think both are cool. The Dual is one heavy mother! I'm currently prepping it to paint it orange, and making it a dedicated Balloon Fight, like the flyer. The RT is cool too. It is a matter of preference.

One thing is for certain: The cosmetics make them awkward to own. The cp on the duals, bulge out, so it's difficult to fit them through a standard door. In addition, it sticks out from the wall. However, it is as mentioned, 2 cabs plumbed together, so it's not ugly to look at. The RT is a beautifully hideous trapezoid, depending on your taste. The problem with it, is it takes up space, unless you put it against the wall. However, it makes Baseball/Tennis 4 player difficult.

Owning both, my nod goes to the Upright. If you use it as two games, it really is cool with the 2 different marquees. Throw Balloon Fight and Wrecking Crew in there and it's even better! It doesnt mean I'm dissing the RT, homies! I just have the pleasure of owning both!

It would be cool to get a dual upright and keep one side as Vs. and install a Mario Bros. board and harness. That way you could have Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. in the same cabinet.

OP........... This thought had crossed my mind, more than once! In addtion, I also thought of the following combinations:

DK/DKJR

Mario Bros/Popeye

Both set ups would be cool. Maybe paint one side blue and one orange. Put one piece of each side art on a side too. Example: Blue side with DK art and orange side with DKJR art. It's really not a bad idea!

The only real set back is the angle that is cut for the original cp. You would have to modify it with wood, to make the cp's fit, if switching out the games.

A storage unit I bought out had a empty VS Dual upside down. I ended up scrapping it out. I think I still have the metal Nintedo ID tag somewhere if anyone wants it.

I think both are cool, but I lean towards the red tent. I think it has a more unique design. That said I wouldn't mine owning a dual upright. If the guy selling his for $395 on Ebay was in PA I'd be all over it. Heck I could sell of Dr. Mario for $100 and have a nice dual upright for $295. :)

I used to own one a LONG time ago...

There's a Dual collecting dust in the closed Super Bear Arcade in Big Bear, CA. Wasn't working when I was there.

I remember seeing them all over when I was a kid. It's the first machine I played V.S. Baseball on.

red tent

i converted enough of those red tents into cyberballs "back in my day" and can tell you that you have to keep one monitor out until your done to have any room to work in there.
They look great when i was done though. Perfect for cyberball. Easier to move then cyberball upright double cabinet!

I have two upright dualsystem cabs

I have never seen one that hasn't been beat up badly. Both of the ones I picked up cheap were also beat up. It is my current goal to restore both. I have done a lot of prep work to make sure all the parts are lined up in preparation for the restore and the four monitors are recapped. I still need to get new smoked glass cut for the bezels and I am dependent on the offset Black Tmolding coming through.

The end result should be pretty cool for a Nintendo fan. They will be placed back to back in the center of the room. One Dualsystem will have Balloon Fight and another will have a Duck Hunt/Hogans Alley combo.

Still trying to figure out what paint I want to go with. Keep the grey or perhaps go with black.

I think the cabinet is pretty cool and gives off a nice atmosphere whether having separate games or something like Balloon Fight co-op. You certainly need the space for one, let alone two, but my back to back scheme is actually quite efficient for four gaming positions relative to even three separate cabs.

I'm thinking SMB in one side and Duck Hunt in the other. NES combo cartridge be damned! I want to shoot that f**king dog!
