Hey guys,

Picked up a Nintendo R-Type last weekend with a sharp xm-2001n that was "not working". Get it home and plug it in, can hear that high voltage isn't working. Got the chassis pulled out, right away it was one of those "well theres yer problem!!!"

I'm assuming this is the result of a cold solder joint over the years? Searching this is common problem with this monitor. I've never seen one burnt so badly, all the solder is gone! Im guessing the width coil is high voltage? Would someone mind explaining how the width coil/circuit works?

Going to install cap kit, reflow a few spots, and repair the leg/pad/trace tonight and see what I get.

Any advice if there is another underlying issue?

I had one of these with a similar problem, but the coil looked like it had gone critical -- there was a hole burned through the board big enough to put your finger through!

I removed the width coil and cleaned and re-tinned the legs. Cleaned the trace and pad, which was more intact than I thought. Removed some extra masking, and was able to bridge the gap with just solder. Worked out well.

Cap kit I ordered came with 24 caps; 11 of 24 caps were incorrect values. Annoying.

Throw chassis back in, apply power. Hear HV fire right up, woohoo!

Loooove this game.

I hate to necro an old thread, but I also have a sharp xm200IN monitor with a blown width coil. There is no core remaining.

Once I'm done with the cap kit (and I repair the blown trace leading to the resistor which I suppose I should replace as well), do you think I can just put the coil back in sans core?

The picture of your original issue doesn't come through, so I can't tell exactly what your original problem looked like.

Hmm, it is odd the original picture does not appear as its still in my photobucket. My problem was that the solder joint on the bottom of the width coil had melted and burned.

As far as I know, it will not work without the ferrite core. You may want to try messaging arcadecrt or buffet on here and see if they have a parts chassis to rob from.

This is what I had:

it will work without the ferrite core but your pic may be way to wide.

Thanks for the info!

I'll likely try it just as an experiment then, as I picked up an additional xm200in chassis in working condition from someone on here. Hopefully one day I can source a replacement width coil and have this chassis as a fully functional backup.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I think I have the same problem with my XM-2001N I just picked up. I guess it's common in these monitors?

Someone had previously tried to jumper wires to fix the issue apparently and it didn't work as there is a huge hole where the resistor sits. Not sure if the width coil even works anymore. I may try to patch it up next week. Might as well give it a shot, it's an oversized paperweight otherwise. A shame as the rest of the chassis is super clean.

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE

I'm not sure what this part's supposed to look like, but my screen's too wide and it's making the monitor hum way too loudly. Mine has a slot for an allen wrench deep in there, but after trying fruitlessly to adjust it the wrench came back out steaming. Am I doing something wrong or do I need a new H-coil?

YES your doing it wrong.

you HAVE to use a Plastic adjustment tool.

if not the metal will induce a field, resulting in your burnt fingers.

so if I use a plastic allen wrench, that'll actually adjust the coil? I can see in there that there's a slot for it at least, so does that mean the core's still intact?

yes it will adjust the coil.

as long as you did not break the ferrite core with the metal allen it should be fine.

Peace
Buffett

Bump an old thread, I'm having the same issue. The actual copper portion of the coil still looks good but doubt I'll be able to adjust the graphite core. Do think I can still use it? What are the other two pins used for, just mounting pegs?
