I saw in my Wal Mart flyer that starting tonight at midnight, you can get an XBox 360 'Arcade' for $199 with a free $100 Wal Mart gift card, bringing the total to $99 + tax.

First off....how is the "Arcade" version different from a "better" version?

Secondly, is anyone else planning to get one?

No HD on the Xbox Arcade version, so put some of your gift card and ante up on a Hard Drive!

How hard is it to swap out the 256Mb card for a hard drive? From what I see, that is the weak point on the Arcade vs Elite.

We have a walmart credit card for xmas use. I think I might get one at that price :) Wife is checking to see if they will hold one for her since she works there.

Arcade has no hard drive. You'll need one eventually, and seeing as how M$ wants to nickel and dime their customers to death you have to buy it from them. Other than that it's basically the same.

I won't be buying one. I gave up on Xbox long ago. I have had 2 RROD on me and will not give M$ another dollar. I have a box of them sitting in the closet that I plan on messing with eventually.

Can you just buy an eBay Xbox 360 hard drive? Are they easy to install? It looks like $20 will get you a hard drive from eBay.

You can only use Microsoft's 360 HD. It snaps on, there's no real installing or anything. The HD's are pretty expensive per gigabyte... like over a dollar per GB expensive. You'll fill up the 256 pretty fast if you play more than a few games. And if you use Xbox live and want to download content, well pretty much plan on getting one.

This is a pretty decent deal though. Better deal than a Wii... and with better games. I might actually have to pick one up now.

sorry for so many replies to this..

If I get the cheapest HD, can i switchthe drive itself with a regular hard drive then? <-- Xbox newb

The HardDrive is just like a big memory card... They snap on and off the top of the unit with pushing a button. I take mine to friends houses all the time, it's nothing to add one or switch them. It's just as easy as plugging the controller in.

While there may be a hack out there, I've never heard anyone mention it on any of the video game forums I frequent. If there is, it's probably not easy and it's more trouble than it's worth.

There is a hack To put in another drive out there. I thought about it but haven't done it. It didn't look too bad. Seems like a 60gb from MS was $100 or so. No thanks. I still have the 20gb mine came with.

A cheap way to upgrade the xbox hard drive is to buy a dead one for the plastic casing, buy a Western Digital 120 gig BEVS series drive (or larger but only 120 will be useable). Locate and download the 120gig BIN file (google it) and you can flash the drive to work in your XBOX360 ;)
I've done this to two 360's and it works like a charm. I refuse to pay Microsofts bullshit price for a regular 9.5mm 7200rpm hard drive that can be had any where.
Seriously google it - PLEASE no PM's asking for help.
