Trying to fix an Xbox 360 for a friend that's stuck on a messed up update. It ask for it right as soon as the machine boots. I can't access the dashboard or anything. I've tried installing the newest update by USB and CD isn't doing anything. I think it needs the update for the game it was getting it from. The game was Modern Warfare 3. I don't have a copy of that handy. I don't really have any newer Xbox 360 games to update with.

Does anybody know the update I need to get this update finished. I'm honestly not sure what went wrong when my friend installed the update. I asked em if the drive was flashed to play burned disc and he said no. He just said when he tried playing Modern Warfare it messed up.

I just get a message that says can't upgrade disc and that's all I can get the Xbox to display.

Where is your friend's MW3 disc? Rent one or borrow one and the update will complete. This usually happens when a flash of the DVD drive takes place from a backup copy, the update tries to continue and the backup can no longer be read so it fails. Your "friend" is not telling you the whole truth.

I notice the box has been opened. He says it was never able to read backups I'm just going off what he said. I've already fixed a Reciver and Xbox 360 with Red Lights for em. So If I fixed this service fee could go up. If I got to get into unlocking a drive I ain't getting into all that.

What your describing Is very common and has to have the update finished with the disc used. Problem is you will have to reflash the drive to continue the update because this only happens with people using a modded 360... I'm not sure of any other way it could of happened.

Would I need a bin, key and all that jazz? Or can I still extract it from the drive. Cause I'd just about put everything I own on em not having back ups. I've never flashed a drive on my own.

I'm thinking the key should be present assuming they flashed correctly

Is there already an update file on the system for that game? I've found if there are 2 on different devices (hdd and usb) the game will keep prompting for an update and fail.
