Hiya, I have a new 360 system, and I bought one of those N network adapters. I owned a Wii for a couple of years and I can pick up Wifi, eventhough there's no wife in the house. I just scan on the Wii and it will pick up connections. I can use it for the internet but I mainly use it to download games. Now my new 360 on the other hand I can't pick up anything with it, even with the Wireless N adapter installed. Do the 360 not pick up wifi connections like the Wii? Or do the 360 require something else? I only have a computer in my house which has the internet by way of cable.

I assume you've checked the obvious like location (is the 360 hooked up to the same TV as the Wii is/was?). I had thought that maybe the Wireless N adapter for 360 didn't work with old b/g networks (which is what the Wii can connect to), but the specs say that it does, so that shouldn't be it.

I've read things in the past saying that some N adapters (not the 360 one specifically, though) can connect to other networks (a/b/g), but do so at a shorter range - maybe that's a possibility?

Does the adapter itself have some kind of setting so that it knows how to scan for various network types? I wouldn't think it would, but maybe?

Yeah, you plug a CAT5 cable into the Ethernet port, then plug it into your router...just like you would any computer.

With that N adapter, you may have to have your router setup to support WPA security. The Wii will do B or G and WEP or WPA, but if that N adapter doesn't support B and/or WEP(And not all hardware supports G with WEP, infact most don't) you will have to make sure the router is set for N/G with WPA and not B with WEP.

Ok I have no internet/router hooked up too it. I just figured it would pick up wireless internet like my Wii. Right out of the box my Wii has picked up internet on it's own, with nothing hooked up too it, just the PS and AV cables.

Xbox 360 + the Microsoft Wireless adapter should (in most cases) allow you to connect to any available wireless network around, just like the Wii.

Hmmmmm, it must be the location of my xbox then. Cause the Wii is one floor up, by a window, the 360 is kinda in the basement, with the closest window about 30 feet away. Maybe an extension for the N adapter is what I need. If I had the adapter next to the Wii there's no reason I shouldn't pick up the wifi, right?

In theory, yeah. I'd say that's most likely the reason - if it's in the basement, I'd wager it'd be difficult enough to pick up a good signal from a router in your own home, much less next door or a few houses down. Also in theory, the higher up you are the more likely you are to pick up a signal.

I went the cheap route (those MS adapters are too expensive for my liking :p) and just ordered a ton of cable to run down the stairs along the baseboard to a switch near the TV that then routes to the various systems (though the Wii and PS3 are both connected wirelessly now), of course that won't work for you if you don't have your own connection in house.

Just do what I do, grab another "cheap" router that's supported by something like Open-WRT/DD-WRT and run it in repeater bridge mode.

I have 3 routers in my house running DD-WRT, they're all linked in bridge mode(Not Repeater bridge, the other 2 don't accept wireless clients) so that my gear in the basement can access the internet on the main floor, as can my stuff upstairs without running any wires.
I don't need Wifi adapters for anything, only my laptop and the Wii are making use of direct WiFi access, everything else is wired to the bridges.
Running one in Repeater Bridge though, will allow you to have a nice wireless point down in the basement to connect to, that you can "point" at the router upstairs.

You can pick up something like the D-Link DIR-615 I use for the two bridges for like $30 now I think.

Running cable will give you a better connection if you're playing online.. also I hope you're not entering any billing info if you're connecting to other people's networks, if they wanted they could easily log every keystroke you make.

No, on the Wii I just click 'search for an access point' and different ones will come up. I just click on one and it performs the on-line test and i'm connected. That's it. I gave up on the Xbox Live for now.

if you have the xbox wireless N adapter thats all you need if your not gonna hardwire it. The only problem is your trying to steal internet and that makes it harder, log on your wii and try to find the ip settings/dns server and then manual log that into the xbox, I have had a shit ton of problems with my xbox when getting a new adapter and new router. I went to wireless n and could NOT for the life of me get an open NAT. I ended up going back to g, its open and faster. The thing with N is I think the distance has a lot to do with it. Same with my pc, a wireless n card gets me 2-3 bars in my room, If I move the pc 10 ft towards the router, it gets me a full 6 and flies..
