Didn't want to start another TMNT thread so I mentioned a sound issue for that pcb in the existing thread.

1)I also have problems with X-Men. I've got one board with ZERO sound. The board had sound with no problems, then I turned it on one time and it was gone. I switched it to mono to see if I could get sound out of the JAMMA pinout and it did nothing.

2)I've got another board that had no problems until recently. I'm getting the sound of static crackling that seems to be getting worse with time.

Any suggestions or ideas for these two boards?

Thanks,

How does the large, black epoxy coated sound chip look? More and more the caps under the coating are starting to puke and causing damage to the traces on that chip and you may be able to tell if some of them have leaked. It's really unforutnate but it's just becoming more and more of a problem as time goes on and the caps die. Personally I'm on my 3rd X-Men boad for my 6 player machine (although the 4 player pcb I have had longer than any of the 6 player pcbs and it's still going strong...knock on wood) The good news however is that it is possible to fix the problem. You have to scrape away that black coating and then replace any caps and/or repair traces damaged by the leaking caps. There's a website from a guy in Canada that tells you how you can attempt it or he was willing to try and if successful the cost was $150, but if he's not successful no charge other than maybe shipping it back to you. I've been meaning to attempt this on the original board that goes with my 6 player machine. Someone had actually broken one of the caps but it still worked for a while then died completely. The other non-working one I have is completely dead too IIRC.

Now with all that said, it's possible something else could be the problem, but my money's usually on that chip.

Okay, so I removed the the black stuff from the amp and scrubbed the surface with a light amount of contact/tuner cleaner and a light bristled toothbrush and there's no improvement on either board. The sound is totally out on one and there's still static and occasional pops coming from the other. The link that was given above says to run jumper wires OR remove the caps. I was under the impression that the amp wouldn't work without the caps. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Remove the caps and find out while noting where the caps were just in case? Seems easy enough to try if you dont get an answer here. Thats what my thought would be anyway.

Maybe it's just worded funny? I can't imagine how it could work without the caps. I've always understood it to mean that you have to replace any caps that are bad/leaky and fix any broken traces caused by the leaky caps.

i had some funky sound on my neo-geo. i removed 2 small caps and that fixed it right up. i don't quite understand it either, but it did work.
