The manual references a free play option that doesn't show up on my screen. Anyone have this or know how to activate it? Does it even exist?

A few other little issues that I can use some advice on:

P1 coin-in is always set to ON, so I can't use P1.
P2, it doesn't allow you to change characters when continuing like it does on P3 and P4. It just continues with your current character.

Any ideas where to start debugging these 2 issues?

None of the X-Men pcb's I've had allow you to set it to freeplay so I don't think it's an option unless there's some different version of the PCB out there.

Your player 1 coin issue could be simple or may be a board problem. Check the wiring of the player 1 coin switch. It should have a ground wire on the common terminal (probably labled as "com") and then another wire on the normally open terminal (N.O.). If someone moved the second wire from normally open to normally closed (N.C.) then the switch would show as continually on. If it's a pcb problem then there are a few components that make up that player coin input circuit. I had the same problem with my Simpsons PCB's player 2 coin input and was able to look at the schematic to see what the small handful of components were involved with that circuit. Tracing the path of the signal back from the edge connector, I found an IC with one of its legs shorted to ground.

I should've mentioned that it's not the button. It works correctly for my other games, so I'll check the grounds on the board.
