I have an opportunity to buy this game working (one monitor has a wave in it) and am debating what to do! From my understanding, this game is huge, breaks down into three pieces with two monitors. I do have to get it down 16 stairs, 36 inch door frame. Is it to much of a pain to get down there and then it takes up way to much space in my game room or will it be worth it? What is a good price for this game?

Thanks for the input

DO NOT make an offer until you find out whether the sound works. The game has a custom hybrid sound IC with flaky caps that will eventually kill the chip entirely if you don't clean up the mess and replace them, and there are no reproductions of this chip -- once the IC dies, that board will never have sound again. Even if the IC is still savable, replacing the caps is inanely tedious surface mount work that's really easy to screw up and, once again, kill the chip outright.

It was in an arcade, so I am sure it ran all day long. If the sound works, I am ok? Is there a way to check it besides just listening to it?

Listen to it, and make sure both channels work. No static or weirdness. Also, look at the sound hybrid module, and check for corrosion and flaking. You should replace the caps on this module as soon as you can - since it works now, replacing the caps and cleaning up the leakage will prevent it from failing. The whole module is coated in black plastic/paint, and you should see bubbling and flaking of the coating if the caps are starting to leak. If you let it go, the caps will likely eventually corrode the tracks on the board enough to make fixing it incredibly difficult.

It's not worth much. Most people don't want it due to the sheer size. It's one of the biggest arcade games ever made. There is a much smaller stand up 4 player version, but it's obviously not as cool as the six player version.

As for gameplay, it's okay but it's not hard to get bored with it when you can play all day for free.

For all the work involved I'd offer $100.

I agree it's so big you'll never git rid of it if you want too. Definitely a case where you should low-ball.

Great info guys! This is why I like to post my thoughts on here because you guy stop me from making a dumb move. What type of monitor is in these? Standard res 19"?
Also, correction about the monitor before, just talked to him, one monitor picture is 'dull'?
Could that be as easy as wiping the mirror off on the second monitor?

Could be dirt - it's amazing how filthy those things get. Could also be a weak picture tube, or other aging components in the monitor. Generally speaking, many monitors need new capacitors to perform their best, and overall color can be affected by weak/dying caps. Usually it's things like image instability and foldover though.

It's hard to do any real diagnosis without seeing the thing, but if it's working, and the sound works, and it's a game you want, then go for it. Monitors can always be repaired/rebuilt.

With regards to the monitor being dull or just about any other problems it never just needs cleaned, adjusted, or a fuse. Its like hitting he lottery if that's actually the problem.

+1 on checking for sound. With the age of those boards even if you do have sound the board will need the caps replaced very soon. Fortunately there are a few guys on here that can do it.

If I remember correctly, one of the monitors is sitting at the bottom of the cab face up, reflecting into a mirror. This could be the 'dull' one, as it would collect a lot of dust.

Dude, my advice is, don't pick this up unless:

A. You are the world's biggest X-men fan with a giant empty spot in your garage.
B. You have several local friends who owe you a 'move'
C. You never plan on moving house, ever.
D. It is really cheap and already working.
E. You have 5 friends who are always over playing games, and they all love the Xmen too.

I've only been into this hobby for a year, and I've seen 4 of these for sale already, seems like most people who own them are trying to get someone to come and take them away!

Just my 2 cents! ;-)

I'd take it :) Of course I have a new (to me) house with tons of room, and X-Men 6-player is one of my favorites. But it'd have to be CHEEEAAAAP.

One of the coolest things I've seen in this hobby is Ground Kontrol's mod to their 6-player X-Men. They replaced the two huge CRTs with one bigass widescreen LCD. This allowed them to chop about two feet of fat off of the back of the cabinet (freeing up floor space) and eliminate a ton of weight. And the new widescreen LCD looks stunning -- way better than the two curved CRT tubes ever did. With two CRTs you also have the problem of one tube looking different than the other -- colors washed out or blurry picture, etc. No such problem with one bright, vivid LCD that is a continuous display, and no unsightly line between the two separate displays anymore either. They did an exceptional job. It is sized correctly and it looks factory installed.

I had one for a bit. It had the sound issue, but was still very playable. I played through it a few times, but there's only so many parties that I could have where people would all want to play it as opposed to a linked racing game, a House of the Dead, or some other game that was competing against it for playing time. I decided to let it go and use the space for two other games. There's really only one heavy piece to it--the back half with the two monitors. The control panel piece is just a huge box that I was planning on using as my casket had it been a keeper. The third piece is optional--you can remove the monitor that sticks out the back end of the back half section. I never had to remove it since it went in my garage.

Keep us updated on what you decide.

I like all of the replies, thanks for the info. I have the room but Lukenatme makes a good point about it getting old. I have a good variety of games but my other fighting game (captain america) does not get played much when people are over. Anyone else experience this?

SanTe - Would love to see some pics of that? I look on their website but no pics. My first thought was to put an LCD monitor in there. Would love some more info on this.

Vongoosewink - C, D, E true. 'B' can be accompolished with some beer and 'A' I like superheros but this thing sitting in my basement is an eye catcher (not sure if that is good or bad).

Gader77 - You may need to hook me up with some names!
