My friend called me today and said he is having issues with his x-men. This is showing on the screen when he starts up the machine. Im assuming its an issue with the board but thought i would get some ideas before making the hour trip to his place.

Version UCB ROM RAM check Complete!! Defected IC Found 16b-BAD

Bad chip?

looked through my MAME roms for it, didn't see a 16b but there's a 17l so it's probably not far off.

I'm inclined to say it's a bad rom.

Close... Those self tests are checking RAM, ROM, and custom chips.

You have a bad chip or bad soldering. What is at that location? Is it a RAM or custom chip?

Those silly boards like to give errors on RAM/ROM and custom chips if you have cracked solder joints on the custom chips.

Depends on what the chip is...

I have SRAMs and I have boneyard boards with custom chips. Can you solder in a surface mount chip? I can if you need the work done.

If 16B shows up as bad, the manual says to hold down the test button on the pcb and then turn the game on with the test button still held down.

Which manual is this? I have the 6p version and the manual in front of me but I don't see it anywhere.
???

Am I just missing it?

I don't think it's in all the manuals.

If the chip that is being referred to as bad is the 8 pin EEPROM chip on the Konami boards of that era... you hold down the test button and keep holding it down until it says EEPROM Initializing.
