X-Arcade replacement joysticks for serious Robotron play

This would have been much easier if I had better controls ;)

If I am going to play 9 hours or more again, I think it's time to replace the original joysticks on my X-arcade tankstick. They are decent but don't cut it for serious Robotron play. I need much more precision with much less effort.

I have done a little reading on my options but wanted to ask other players and experts what they thought might be the best replacement joysticks for an X-Arcade controller with Robotron specifically in mind. I also don't mind modding my controller to make this work (drilling, rewiring etc).

Thoughts?

Thanks for any help and happy gaming!

Dominux 8 anybody?

Thanks for the replies so far.

I was doing some research on those options, but I am leaning towards the Dominux 8's at the moment with the optional Hand Candy ball tops (bugger than stock ones).

I also realized I can reduce the space between my joysticks by getting a smaller X-Arcade Dual joystick setup. My current Tankstick has an extra 3-5" in between them at least because of the trackball (which I really don't use anyway).

There have been some good things said about the Dominux8's here and on arcade controls. According to GGG they should fit in the X-arcade as well.

Anyone have any experience with the Dominux8's (with Robotron in mind)?

I've tried the X-arcade sticks that a lot of folks recommend (sorry, I don't recall the model, but they're the $20/pair ones.) But I actually didn't like them after switching to them from Wicos.

Dominux 8 was meant as a repro of the classic Wico. I haven't tried them, so I really can't say anything about them, but if it were me personally, I'd just get a set of real Wicos, with the 2-lb soft repro grommets, as nobody argues about those.

And I just happen to know where you can get a pair. ;)

I totally agree with your post jerky. I have both the Hotrod and X-Arcade sticks and they suck when playing Robotron. The problem is you cannot consistently fire diagonally. Using the original red ball joysticks on an arcade machine, I have no problem rolling the score over (10M). Even multiple times at that. I've played it on MAME many times with both of my joysticks and haven't yet broken 1M. So my answer to your post is this, if you play the game as much as I do (and I do play the crap out of it), I would recommend replacing them with the red ball top joysticks if you haven't already done so (this post is close to 2 years old now). I believe they also have leaf switches instead of micro switches which are much better.
