I am trouble shooting a WWF Superstars board for a friend. It originally wouldn't load, but I have resolved that issue (one of the ribbon cables was loose). Now it loads and plays but there is no sound. The only thing coming from the speakers is static when the volume is adjusted. Is this a sound chip that has flaked out? or am I overlooking another possible error? If it is the chip, how hard is it to find a replacement and how hard is it to replace?
Thanks in advance for any help with this matter.

It may be the sound chip or anything else in the sound circuit. Is anything, like capacitors or resistors obviously broken? Also, does the cab you are playing it in supply all three standard Jamma voltages (+5vdc, -5vdc, and +12vdc)?

Found that the -5V was disconnected. Reconnected it but now I am back to square 1 (the board locks up on the Winners .... screen. I don't see any immediatley obvious damage to the chips/caps/resistors. Will have to continue to look.
Out of curiosity will it effect other games negativley if I leave the -5V connected?

Hmm don't know if there's even a schematic for that board or not. The manual I have doesn't show it at least. It sounds like the sound amp is okay if you can vary the volume of the static, but I'm not sure what else on the board controls sound. Without an eprom burner you can't really check any roms related to sound. Klov says sound is handled by Z80 analog with a YM2151 and a M6295. Maybe look for those chips on the board and re-seat them if they are socketed.
