WTF is with the $200 PPU's on ebay?

well unfortunately when you have a ppu that is used for 2 purposes, that being to play said game like duck hunt, and it is also used to modify a nintendo to get rgb out, it is going to drive up the price. the only way to get this chip is in the few vs games or off a playchoice board. since there is no other source currently for this mod, and the ppu is fairly uncommon. people doing the nintendo mod are willing to pay big $$$. hope that made sense.

ppu

thanks, the way things are going, games are gonna start to get parted out more often

as far as the PPUs, it depends on the PPU as far as its worth.

The ones that can be salvaged and used in the NES RGB mod are worth more because of the number of people that want an NES with RGB. Those PPUs are the ones used in PlayChoice10s, Vs. Duck Hunt (some of them), and Vs. Tennis I believe.

The SMB PPU is roughly worth about 50$ because it is sought after by arcade collectors for nostalgia and it is fairly difficult to find.

However, on the other side, the Hogans Alley PPU is so common that oftentimes you can pick up the PPU and 6 EPROMs for 20$ or a bit more.

So yeah, I can see them being worth 200$, and that is the reason why I won't even consider purchasing a Playchoice10 without the PPU because you will spend more money trying to find the blasted chip than the entire system.

I have been asking on KLOV to purchase a SMB PPU for the last month. It is all I need to get my cabinet up and running.

If someone has an extra one, I would like to buy it. I am desperate, and didn't know that these were being used for more than just getting VS. games working. No wonder they are more difficult to come by now.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Mike

Honestly, I have 4 of those that I am going to list on eBay. They were pulled from a dead PC-10 board (I have 3 more that do work), and a few ragged Vs. chip sets. One came from my Duck hunt set, but I also have it on my PC-10, so I'll give it up on Vs. For $600-$800, I can buy other stuff the kids like better.

I paid $120 for my Vs. cab (cab, monitor, mobo, everything) I don't think its right to spend $200 on a chip.

I think I'll just start buying every cheap Vs. cab I see.

Hopefully that HDMI NES thing will make all the Nintendo RGB'ers stop taking the PPUs. Or the repro universal PPU project.

Be patient guys. I was too lazy to look up the thread but a universal PPU is in the works by one of the KLOV members. Paying $200 is retarded.

Its only certain ppu's that work for the mod, so buying them all up would be kinda pointless. Unless you are just buying the right ones.

Well, the SMB one should NOT work for the mod. Just found out about the mod today due to this thread. Raven, if you have one I would be interested in purchasing.

Thanks,

ppu what does it do? sorry rookie here!

It's the Picture Processing Unit. It takes the display code and processes it to be displayed on the screen. In this case on the machines mentioned the PPU outputs in RGB, so they use this chip to make their NES be able to display that video type. Also there is a project over on the NA forum where a guy built a nes the size of a NES cartridge that uses one of these PPUs. I know he was buying as many as he could find to buid this, as he was selling the completed units/kits.

I agree that hopefully the HDMI NES will solve the price hike and chip scavenging.

Bad news....I went through my parts at lunch and didn't find the static bag with the PPU. I'll do a more thorough look after I get home, but methinks I may have junked it. oops.
