Just picked up a one onwner ms pac . Guy said it just stopped working.Brought it home and plugged it in and this is what im getting(numbers and letters) .I also noticed that this chip(H1h) has a burn on the back where the solder is .Could this be my problem or is it something else?Is this an easy fix or should I send it to be repaired.I would like to keep this board in the machine because of its originality. What do you guys think.I havent solder a circuit board scince highschool and that was about 15 years ago.I dont minfd the challenge because thats what I love about this hobby. One more thing I think the monitor needs a cap kit (colors dim and jailbars)but I never have done this and dont know what or where to buy the right kit .Is it easier to cap it or just buy a new monitor? Any and all info is greatly appreciated. Thanks fellow KLOVers.Keep playin wiht your joysticks!

I can't offer any insight on the game board level repair, but for your cap it or replace it question.

easy (and weak): buy new one
cheaper (and more self-gratifying): cap it

;)

depends on what chassis it is, I think most of these came with G07s, and others came with Wells 4600s (I think). with the G07, you have to replace other components as well (like the flyback, I believe the HOT, maybe something else) because the new capacitors seriously put out too much and it blows the other original parts.

but fear not, I hear the G07 is the easiest monitor to work on.

that is, of course, if you have one. poke around, see if you can find any labels on the monitor frame. you never want the brand/info that's on the back of the tube, that has nothing to do with the monitor chassis itself.

if it's a G07, I think therealbobroberts carries like a deluxe rebuild kit for those.

I'm sure someone else will chime in, if you haven't already you can start another thread in the monitor repair section, you'll get more bites/help that way.

That actually looks like flux from an old repair, not burn... probably not a problem. If you know how to use a multimeter, I'd check voltages... low voltages cause lots of problems on all kinds of games. Dirty edge connectors and dirty fuse holders cause problems especially on Ms. Pac.

Thanks for the replys guys.Does anyone have any thoughts to the garbled shit that im getting on the screen. I have already resitted all the chips (maybe I put one in backwards ?)really lost on this one any input would be great!I put this board in my pacman adn im getting the same screen so I feel this is definately a board problem. Thanks fellow KLOVers.

I justed picked up a ms pac on Friday and it was doing the exact same thing. I took a big pink eraser and cleaned the edge connector on both sides and then my board booted up correctly.

I am not saying it will work for you but it may be worth a try...

I bet if you get it into test mode it will indicate a ram error. One of the 2114's is probably bad. If you get the garbled junk on the screen upon power up put it into test mode and after a couple minutes it should bring the test screen up.

Is the screen static, or do the letters and numbers change? I recently had a similar problem with my Ms Pac. When I booted I had the same looking screen as yours, a bunch of garbage that didn't move.
I ended up doing the following to get it to work;
Replaced Sync Bus controller. After replacing it, now I had a bunch of garbage on the screen that at least moved around.
Cleaned the 2532 A, B, C, and D chips located above the SBC . I just cleaned the legs of the chips with some fine steel wool. Be careful not to bend or break the legs.
After I did the above, Ms Pacman was working once again. :)
Good luck

Most likely culprits are bad eproms in row 6 or bad 2114 ram. Keep in mind this could mean bad sockets or broken legs on eproms also. Could also be bad sync bus card or socket.
If mspac it could be bad ribbon cable.

OK .took out all eproms cleaned the legs and still nothing.disconnected the sbc and turned it on adn still getting the same image.i noticed that the eproms in the 6 row are really hot ,is this normal or does this mean something.im really stuck and dont know what to do.i also resetted all the chips with the notches facing the same way is this correct or is there something else i need to look at when resetting all the chips. Thanks for the continued support guys.

If that is indeed solder flux, you can clean it off with alcohol.

Get as close to 100% as you can find, use a cotten swab and rub it off.

With the machine off, turn the test switch on to test. Turn the game on, if it has the garbled screen let it go for 5 minutes or so, eventualy it should bring up the test screen and tell you what ram chips/locations are bad.

Well I put it in test mode and nothing .the screen stays the same and it wont do anything else.I think im ready to send this thing to someone that knows what in the hell they are doing.I aso wouldnt mind buying a rebuild kit from bob roberts but i dont even know what i need .Does anyone have the skills to fix this for me on the cheap. My wifes not happy with me spending money on these right now.Or can anyone just post the parts that i need to buy to do a total rebuid on this board. Thanks again for everyones input .Klovers rock.

Are you sure Billy Mitchell didn't sneak into your place and get to the kill screen?

I would say bad IC sockets and or dirty corroded or broken legs on the IC chips. This includes the 40 pin Z80 CPU which could also be bad. But If you have no new sockets or IC chips and no soldering skills then send it out to someone to fix. It will be as good as new. :D

I wouldn't trust that ChannelManic guy, I mean really he's a manic ______? lol

Channel is good at fixing stuff, just wish he was closer to my part of the Dallas Area for those repairs I can't get to.

How long did you leave it in test mode?
