im running out of room in my arcade and only have room for 2 more at the most, so i put an ad on craigslist for the only 2 i really still want (quantum and robotron). i never really expected a response (at least for the quantum), but alas, the day i posted i get an email from a gentleman saying, "i got both of them. you got real money." knowing how much these games go for (and assuming he does as well), i ask how much he wants for them, and he emails back with a selling price. at this point i thought to myself, "self, you are about to get a grail and a half!" i emailed him back asking to set up a time to check out (aka pick up) the games, and received no response. luckily, a couple collectors in the area know the guy, and one of them was bringing a board out to his place, so i decided to tag along. we get there and shoot the shit for a minute, etc. it finally gets down to game time and i check them out.
robotron is in great shape. ram error, but it doesnt affect the way the game plays, and its easy enough to fix. quantum is looking rough though. someone decided to saw off the top half of one of the sides and replace it with a crude plywood cutout (complete with magic marker sideart). dude said someone wanted to get the monitor out and didnt have the key. whatever works, i guess. anyway, aside from the cabinet woes, the game is decent. all matching numbers, original amplifone monitor, etc. i play a couple games and am busting at the seams since ive never really picked up a grail before.
now its deal time. naturally, being a klover, i offer him a few hundred less than he was asking for the 2 games and get declined. it was worth a shot, and i really want these, so i bump it up a hundred. this goes on for at least a half hour (in between him getting distracted, showing his house, calling his friend to get his opinion about the sale, etc), and we finally arrive at his asking price. i was wary of paying what he was asking for the quantum, since it was in rough shape, but how often do grails come up (especially locally)? i told him id pay what he was asking to just be done with the deal. "mmmmm." was the only response i received. i brought out my wad of cash. "i have to think about it. ill call you tomorrow." wait. what? really? you responded to my craigslist ad. you gave me a price. i brought what you were asking, and youre getting wishy washy? now, i dont think he was intentionally rubbing the fact that he has a quantum in my face, but i was insulted that he would respond to my ad and give a price, then refuse to sell. he also refused to sell the robotron after i offered his "asking price." IF YOU DONT WANT TO SELL YOUR GAMES, DONT RESPOND TO MY AD, AND DEFINITELY DONT GIVE ME A FUCKING PRICE! needless to say, im pretty salty about the situation. and one of the many cherries on this shit sundae is the fact that he picked the quantum up for $75 and its been sitting in storage for 10 years, not being played.
im still waiting on his call. thanks klov for letting me vent. anyone have a quantum theyre willing to sell?
