The biggest, is, as you guessed, the Main PCB. Next size down is the ROM Board, and the smallest board is the Interface Board (also called Widget Board)

The interface board, or, the idea and execution of usage, is used in Multiple Williams games, although they are not all strictly interchangeable with one another. For example, a Defender Interface won't work in a Robotron, but, the Interface Board in a Robotron will work in other games. To add more fun, the Defender Widget won't work in a Stargate, but, the Stargate will work in a Defender.

Robotron-2084, is a great resource for identifying Williams hardware and goes into some depth regarding the above statement far more detailed than I could.

As for your picture, the only thing you are missing is the Sound Board, which, in this image, is the top most board.

Enjoy Defender - one of my all time favorites.

The early series is only for the upright. The early main pcb only has one video decoder rom and cannot flip screen for cocktail mode.

awesome! thanks for your input. now another thing - what the hell is all this mumbo jumbo about early series vs later series of the same damn game (defender), as shown here:

Which sound pcb do i need for mine?

D8121: 5771-09472 (early)
D8224: 1B-2001-146 (later)

so so confusing...
