I just received a UMK3 that i purchased and the U126 Game Rom comes up bad during rom test. I've tried pushing on the chip (not while the game was running) to see if mabe the socket was loose but it's not, so i'd like to source a replacement (original or freshly burned), to see if it's the chip or the socket. If anyone has one or can burn one for me please let me know as it would be greatly appreciated.

Btw. the game runs fine from what i can tell sound works everything else tests fine except this 1 chip, i've been able to play for over 30minutes and had the game running over an hour with 0 issues.

I'd help you out but I'm moving house and everything is in storage. I've checked my PC and I can see that I dumped that ROM file so I need to find an M27C8000 chip to burn it on (I think that's the type). I'll have a look and let you know. Regards Jonathan.

sounds good, and goodluck with the move. m27c800-100f1 is printed on the chips currently socketed.

It might be simpler though - have you removed the chip from the DIL socket? You can remove it usually with a flat bladed screw driver. If the contacts aren't great (dull/oxidised) it might be mis-reading it. I gently sand down the pins with fine sand paper until they're bright and shiny. Make sure you don't apply too much pressure so as not to bend the pins. Re-socket the chip and see what happens. It's worth a try in the first instance.

just tried that, no dice good idea tho.

I've just had a look through my box of EPROMs - I've got dozens of M27C4001 for my MK1 & MK2 builds, but I don't have any M27C8001 EPROMs. The best way of knowing if that chip is corrupted would be to carry out a comparator test in an EPROM programmer against a good known file. It would take me all of 10 seconds to perform. It's not always the chip data that's to blame for the error reading. If everything is working ok I'd leave it until something actually does go wrong. If you really want another chip and you can find an 8001 chip on the net (Ebay) send it to me and I'll happily burn the data on it for you. If you sent me your chip to test you'd be without the working game for a while. Replacing the chip may not cure the error reading on boot up - just to let you know.

let you know in a day or two.

I'm afraid it will be a little longer than that....

I'm pretty sure I told you I'm from Canada,
so shipping will take about 1 week....

.... but it will be such a pretty eprom ! ;-)

Cheers,
Steph

Received it today Steph!!! And it's GOOD!!!! not that i doubted your chip so much as i doubted the socket.

I do have 1 complaint and that is that the new chip doesn't have the years of patina that the old one had, it looks to nice and pretty!

all kidding aside, thanks so much, i didn't expect it to have the nice OE sticker at all :D
