recently picked up a Commando. game works, and the joystick looks like it might be the right kind but is at least not the right color

i need whatever DE woulda put in this thing before sending it out the door from the factory.

doesn't have to be NOS, i'm cool with an accurate/identical repro as well

pics are of my game, and the DE Commando flyer

If anyone can provide a pic of the underside of their Commando showing the right stick, I can probably help you.

My guess is that it's some type of Coin Controls stick, as they were frequently used in DE games. I have a bunch of different ones, if someone can confirm the type.

I can try and take a pic tonight after work.

Oh interesting. That's a Karate Champ stick. (Coin Controls).

But what's even funnier, which I never realized, is that that is basically a Karate Champ cab. (Which again isn't that surprising, as it's Data East), but I didn't notice it off the bat. Same CP and cab profile.

One other thing that would be good to know is which variant stick it is, as there are two. True KC sticks have rubber grommets in them. However, I have ones that are the same leaf-based sticks, but have centering springs instead. I know KC's always came with the grommet sticks, so I've been trying to figure out what used the spring ones.

Troy, if you haven't had it apart, one way you can quickly check is to try pulling up on the stick (i.e., like you were pulling it out of the CP). If it gives at all, it's spring-based. If it doesn't budge, it's grommet.

And ElectricDreamz, I have both, so I can probably help you out.

many thanks again both of you for digging on this.

FWIW i'm gonna start cleaning up the CP hardware today and will be (duh) keeping an eye on the thread

:)

Good info in the 8 way. I'll check what I have tomorrow night, as I have both 4's and 8's I believe. I have a box of KC-style sticks and parts.

And yes, the difference is in the holes in the base. They both have 4 switches, but 8-ways allow diagonal movement, which activates two switches at a time.

Just saw this. I'll check to see if mine is spring or grommet. I have not had it apart. Just got it out of storage. Prolly been in there for 8 years or so....

Ok, I have the following (all 8-way):

- Spring-based, micro switches, with textured matte-black handle (2 available)

- Spring-based, leaf switches, with textured matte-black handle

- Grommet-based, leaf switches, with textured gloss-black handle

Possible others as well, still not done looking. I can post pics later, but bottom line, one of these is probably what you need, when Troy is able to confirm.

Well, I pushed and pulled on the handle and there was no resistance, making me think there was no spring or it was missing. I ended up removing the 4 phillips screws and taking the stick apart. Lo and behold there is a circular rubber grommet in the top part of the base. No spring at all.....

Cool, thanks for confirming.

One more question, Troy. Is the shaft/knob matte black, or glossy black?

There is probably some amount of texture on the knob either way (which may have some degree of hand wear, as I have some glossy ones that are worn almost completely smooth, but you can still see the texture on the bottom part of the knob). But I have some shafts that are a softer not-shiny black plastic, and others that are a harder glossy black plastic.

Ok cool. I have a stick ready to go for ElectricDreamz, and I was guessing glossy from the flyer pic, but it isn't that clear.

If you can check, that would be great. I haven't shipped it yet, and can swap it with a matte one if needed. Thanks, Troy.

I stand corrected...its more glossy.

Side note, my stick feels sloppy/loose. Got anything to tighten that up?
