Finally in the market for a Neo Geo cabinet. While I'm most interested in a 4 or 6 slot Big Red (if I could even fit the damn thing in the house!), I would also be interested in 1 or 2 slots as well (non-conversions), assuming the cabinets are in good shape.

At the moment, I'm not looking for a project, so I'd like to find something in nice shape all around: nice side art, working monitor, etc.

Would obviously prefer to find something local to Houston, TX, but would be interested in seeing anything within a few hundred miles.

You should PM me a number and price range. I'm all over TX, LA, and OK for work, might be able to find you something whilst trolling Craigslist for classics.

Assuming you'd trust my judgment to pick up something worthwhile, your call on that one.

As long as you keep in mind that I'm not looking for a project, then I think I can trust your judgement ;) I'll expand my search as well and if I see something out of my travel range, I might check with you to see if you happen to heading that way or not.

Yeah, the non-project aspect is understood, just keep in mind the monitor could be old and in need of a cap kit or something. Not sure I'd want to take the project on due to the liability, but channelmanic or another local might cap it for you if it needs it.

As for your search feel free, but I was thinking more along the lines of: I find something when I'm out and about; I call to see if you are still looking; I go check it out and followup with more conversation/cell phone pics; and I buy with the implicit understanding that you had better have the cash for what I'm picking up (and be able to make yourself available for it to be dropped off on my schedule).

Also (it would probably make it harder to find since the latter is probably less common) - 19" or 25" monitor? Or no preference?

And I assume we are talking a dedicated red cab only and not a candy cabinet or any sort of substitute?

Oh and don't expect anything further on this for at least a week as I'm overseas. :D

You can always just buy one that has a bad board in it then ship it up to me for repair...

But, I'll be the first to tell you that I don't work on monitors.

Whoops! My bad. :D

Anyways I'd be happy to cap it, but liability is something I will not accept. And you'd have to buy parts. I can say I'm good with monitors that actually *work*... just not so much with fixing broken ones as you already know. :p

Maybe hit up Modessitt if the color is lacking? Not sure what he charges though.

Btw thanks for the tips on soldering/o-scope equipment the other day, channelmanic, picked up a Tektronix TDS-210 on eBay today and am scouting for the Pace stuff now. :)

A cap-kit is fine - I've done a few over the years. Anything past that on monitors and I'd be screwed.

I should have clarified what I meant by project:
  • I don't have any spare monitors, so I need one to be included and working :)
  • I don't have time to do major cabinet repairs, so hopefully no chunks missing - I can get replacement side art if needed, but nice side art is a plus, obviously
  • Internals should all be present any working, though if I found a good deal on a cabinet+monitor only, I could deal with that since I already have two NG motherboards

Yet at the same time, I'm not looking for a fully restored, clean and shiny cabinet for $1000, so I guess it's somewhere in between :p

Yeah, that's cool. I'll PM you my cell (it hasn't changed in case you still have it from years ago).

I suppose that depends on the cabinet, but either is fine in most cases, I believe. I wish I'd taken advantage of the sales when HAPPS was clearing out the Vision Pros a few years back.

Correct. I'd love to have a candy cab one of these days, but it won't fit in with my lineup right now, and I don't think the wife would care for one at the moment :p However, the right price could make all the difference ;)

No worries - I'm in no rush. I'd rather keep my eyes open for a while and get exactly what I want rather than go for the first thing nearby that's only part of what I want. Otherwise I'll end up with another shitty SFII cabinet that I'll never finish...like the one I have that I never finished...

Don't think I have your number anymore, also not sure which number of mine you would have since I didn't have a cell back then. Maybe the old apartment land line.

Hold off I guess, phone doesn't work over here anyways so I'll PM my cell when I get back or something.

Heh... was going to ask about that SFII cabinet, but I guess now I know the answer. Sucks. :(

Sounds good. As I said, I'm in no rush.

I did get some work done on the SFII a few years ago - fixed the most annoying part...that shitty button layout! But I never did put the NOS CPO on there. I need to do that...I did get a new monitor for it a long time ago. That old monitor was just junk I guess. Buying a new Vision Pro was the best money I ever spent on that thing...though that (+ other work that's gone into it over the years) means it went from being a $300 ebay buy to a $1000+ project. In other words, I can never sell the damn thing, even if I wanted to...

Here's some progress pics...what you probably saw was pretty much what's in the first pic...it still looks like the last pic, which is from 2008 :p

Looks a lot better than last time I saw it.

As for the CPO I have a blasting and powder coating setup and would offer to take care of that part for you, but honestly that shit is waaay too time consuming (and free time - at home mind you - is the one commodity I just don't have).

Yep. Exactly why I never got around to it myself...that and I just know I'll fuck it up :p And I want to cut some plexi for it as well, which I've never done.

Hmm for home use? I wouldn't bother with plexi. That is unless your panel is so full of extra holes and bondo work that it is required.

Speaking of which if it is full of extra holes with bondo patching powder coating isn't an option anyways.

Maybe you're right. I probably don't need it. I suppose that would simplify things a bit--a lot.

...No, not by much lol. :D Melting plastic fumes aside that would probably be the easy part.

Getting all the old CPO glue and powder coat off the old panel and proper surface prep/paint is the motherf%cker. Unless you get some paint stripper and have a pressure washer, respirator, and sand blaster at your disposal I see a lot of quality time with a drill, wire wheel, and dust mask in your future. :(

At least that is how I used to have to do it. Not sure there is another good way honestly.

If you do get it stripped to bare metal though and the panel isn't half bondo and JB Weld at this point I could probably throw some powder on it for you sometime. But I'd probably get the Neo first so you have something else to play once you start this process. :D

I don't think it's too bad:

Someday it'll be done!

Oh, yeah lol, nevermind. That will have to be painted. Powder coat relies on having a clean metal surface for the powder to magnetize to and I'm also not sure that Bondo can withstand curing at 450-degrees.

Just get you a Capcom overlay and a sheet of Lexan. You can cut lexan with a circular saw and use a step bit (from Harbor Freight) for the buttons and joystick holes. Paint the rest of the control panel with hammered paint and your good to go.

Ad says $250, yup.

2-slot. 19". Nice button arrangement on the control panel. It does look like the left side is missing t-molding though and maybe like it got an impact by the control panel area. Still for $250 you can't really go wrong since parts value exceeds that.
