I was cleaning up and polishing an ikari warriors rotary joystick handle and threw parts into my ultrasonic cleaner.. Relatively low temperature that I've used to clean buttons before ended up softening and melting/deforming the cap.
SO F'ing MAD.

It's literally the last thing I need for my Ikari resto.

I need a christmas miracle!

We use ultrasonic every day at scuba shop with plastic parts.

We never use the heated option. Ever.

Just amp us the strength of cleaner and use a soft bristle brush (we use ultrasonic toothbrush) after first ride in ultrasonic to help loosen up anything heavy.

oh. no.. that's not the one i f'ed up. that's a pic of what i need.

THIS is the one that softened up.

Granted i got pissed and tried softening it again and then mangled a but more out of anger when i realized it was a loss, followed by winging it across the garage.

Cant believe it softened so easily.

Well yes. I know ill be doing that now. Whats odd is i cleaned probably 50 buttons previously and experimented with temps and never had an issue.

Going fwd though ill be filling the thing with ice water.

FML

Lol

I might make a plaster mold of the good cap i have. Get some of the recommended pushbutton smooth top replacements, heat those up and press the into the mold to het the raised logo.

The chances of it working are at least as good as finding someone with a spare cap i guess.

Somewhere there is a thread on using a yellow control button in place of the cap. Didn't look too bad . Not sure if it was a special brand or not. At very least it's a good temporary fix.
Should've bought a good set from me . No cleaning no hassle.

Ha. I had already bought 2 NOS sticks but one was missing a handle so i picked up another single for cheap with a decent handle. The cap didnt really need a cleaning, just the handle, but i threw it in for the hell of it. Dumb mistake.

On the plus side, the handle looks brand new. 😀

You would figure someone would have made a 3D printed one by now from all the people trying to pop them out with a screw driver…

I've used the top of a yellow convex button before in one. Not super tight like the original but it is easier to get to the nut if I ever have to remove the stick.

Theres a 3d file for the cap with logo on thingiverse. The issue is finding the right yellow color filament or resin. My resin printer would print them nice.

Also going to 3d scan the NOS handle and cap i have

I ordered a couple of yellow happ competition convex buttons to try my embossing idea. Theoretically it should work getting the temp right to soften the plastic just enough will be the trick.

This is my spare odd one I mentioned earlier.
Maybe you can sacrifice melted part to make patches , sand and polish?

I think the top of mine is so deformed it probably wouldn't work out. hell, if i could mix up the right color resin i could just make a silicone mold and cast a perfect one but unlikely to figure out that color.

you can see how distorted this one is

Just throwing this in here in case it helps.
