Looking for an inexpensive Gauntlet or Gauntlet II board. Doesn't need to work, but shouldn't be completely stripped of everything, either. Presence of slapstic not required, but would be nice if the other custom chips are present. Mostly want to verify a few things from the schematic and investigate a couple of other random details, and the board I actually own is on long-term loan 1500 miles away right now.

Hoping to get something for cheapish (~$100?), since I'm not actually planning on tossing it in a cab and playing it.

If it encourages anyone to want to part with one for me, I'm one of the guys that developed the gauntlet/gauntlet2 multigame hack. ;) (...and am looking at doing more Gauntlet hacking in the near future. The bug has bitten me again. Argh.)

Thanks!

I can help you. PM sent. Got both kinds untested, but pulled from machines BITD and put in storage. Haven't gotten around to making a harness yet.

BTW: Last auction for an untested one was on ebay for $60. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATARI-GAUNTLET-PCB-UNTESTED-/322359925819

I know there aren't any on ebay right now except for quarterarcade, who inexplicably wants $250 for non-working and/or untested ones.

PM me.

You have something cool planned? I'm restoring a gauntlet now and want to do the dual boot mod so I'm curious.

Nothing super specific yet. Gauntlet has always been a fascination for me. I did a lot of reverse engineering work on it 15 years or so ago (...man, I feel old), got distracted by life for a while, but now have gotten bit by the bug again. So here we are.

A couple of vaguely specified things I'd like to do, though:
* bug fixing - there's a couple of big bugs (like the fight power bug in G2) that would be nice to patch
* balancing - G2 is very much balanced for 'eat quarters in arcade', and I'd love to see it better balanced for someone playing at home (i.e. make it at least possible to survive for a long period on one or two quarters)

I also have the kind of silly idea of recreating the Gauntlet hardware with modern components for a lot of the discreet stuff, to basically end up with a tiny board that works (effectively) exactly the same, running the same code on the same processor. There's a couple of people that have reimplemented a lot of the custom chips on CPLDs and the like, so it should be pretty possible.

It would also be neat to add a bunch of new features, but that's pretty pie-in-the-sky right now.

I'd also love to publish a bunch of the theory-of-operation and documentation of the reverse-engineered code and the like.

Also, yay for the dual boot mod! I actually spent years wondering whether anyone had gotten that to work. I've seen a couple around online recently, though, and am quite happy it's worked for people, and is still being used!

p.s. Several PMs sent. ;)

Saw your posts from last year, are you still doing things with Gauntlet? The mini board replacement would sweet for a game with such a big board.

I have a non-working board with G1 chips, and a working board with minor graphical glitches (few random missing/dancing pixels after warming up) and G2 chips that I am looking to get repaired and possibly have the dual hack done on it for me, because I'm just not that savvy, even though it doesn't seem super difficult to do. Thanks for being a part of that, because it's the best of both worlds for this game! I favor G2, but G1 was such a landmark and the change of music and boards is always fun to go back to!! Too bad Atari didn't just produce boards that did both back in the day for coin operators...

Any suggestions on who could help me if you are not currently, and also suggestions on the joysticks, my machine has colored replacements and the diagonal shots are terrible. I see used originals going for $100 each, but I just want something cheap that will work similarly to the originals.

Also, I sorta want to remove the G2 artwork off of the control panel, and I have heard a hair dryer being able to do this, but I'm pretty sure the original would come off along with the G2...?

Thanks much,
Tim
