WTB: Egret 2 Candy Cab

Why would you need to rotate your monitor THAT much?

I tate my cabs fairly often. Usually when hosting game parties to cater to which type of guests I'll be having over. If its a bunch of neo-geo freaks or puzzlers then I like to have a couple set hori. If its a shmupper crowd them a couple set vert.. Its just a nice option to have.

The Egret rotate mech is very slow, it takes almost as long to turn the crank a million times to flip it.

Not sure what crank you're talking about. To tate an Egret2 monitor, you just remove 4 wingnuts, turn the monitor (no crank) then screw the wingnuts back in. The monitor shroud is harder to tate than the monitor but only because the front plastic is hinged and cannot be easily removed like the Astro so you are forced to tate the plastic shroud in place. Tating the monitor a piece of cake and done in less time than the Astro and doesn't require feats of strength to do so. I'd have to pull my astro out, remove the front plastic, lay the cab on its back, remove the nuts then lift and tate the monitor. Not too hard to do, but probably more than most people want to deal with.

An Astro and Blast is all you need to cover every base.

It comes down to a matter of taste. Alot of people don't like the new Astro styling, especially the boxy speakers and colors. It took me a little while for it to grow on me, but I do like them. For some reason, I've noticed scratchy sound on every sega new astrocity I've owned or played. Most noticeable on games featuring explosions. Not a deal breaker but annoying nonetheless. Which is why I have a Sega astro2. Molded Bose speaker enclosures..super sexy, heh. Too bad Sega didn't make more of them. I've heard people call new astro's the equivalent of a honda civic as far as candies go. Egret2's are definitely Beemers, lol. Blastcities are just plain weird looking and out of sorts with the huge marquee holder.

If money is not an issue, the Egret2 is the sh1t. Love everything about the cab. Including having the cab on 4 wheels to easily move around instead of having to lift to manuever the cab on 2 wheels like most candies. Taito got everything right with the Egret2. A shame they didn't include the tate mechanism on their Egret3 or Atomiswave. But you can definitely find 2 new Astro's for the same price and have a dedicated vert and hori so you'd never have to tate (theoretically) again. Or Christoph can splurge and track down 2 Egret2's ;P

Why on earth would you lay an astro cab on its back to tate?

The monitor only weighs about 90 pounds. I've flipped it bare handed. You're holding that weight for around 5 seconds. With two people it's a complete cake walk.

Rotate mech or not, I would not use that as an excuse to be flipping a monitor multiple times a week. You risk wearing out parts of the cab/nuts etc. These cabs were not designed to be flipped willy nilly, on location they'd probably have the same game in it for many months.

I probably will play hori games for about 3 months, and then flip it and keep it tate for 3 months.

That is completely subjective to the condition of your speakers.

A New Astro is going to have cheapo 1995 Japanese speakers in it, years of smoke isn't going to help them sound great.

The Egret II has really crappy speakers in it too, and I've heard numerous people say the New Astro stock speakers sound better.

The New Astro actually uses ported speaker boxes, and I've put new drivers in mine with ease. It sounds incredible.

The egret II has it's speakers hollow in the cab, i've seen people shove HP desktop speakers in there, but it's harder to fit legit speaker drivers in it. The Blast City also has this problem.

Try it, you might like it. Its a trick I learned from my good friend Matsu, who tates games regularly for customers and his locations ;) then again I'm a wimp and usually don't have the luxury of having an extra hand around when I need one. Laying the cab on the back to tate is the easiest way when doing it with one person. Totally removes the awkwardness and risk of damaging the monitor or bolts. I don't tate that often because i have 3 candies (used to have 9) and don't play games much anyways. But if I see little risk of tating regularly if thats what ya want to do, as long as you're careful. But having a dedicated vert and hori is definitely the way to go, if you have the space :)

Someone hook Christoph up! For those wondering, He's looking for one of these (middle and right):

yeah I just called my good buddy Matsu to see if he'd be willing to let any go..(he has a bunch on location) but he said no because he can't get anymore from japan. There has to be at least 100 or so (mebbe more) here in the states, so stay patient and on the lookout, they do pop up. The good thing is alot of gamers usually find themselves in a financial pinch so people sell off their cabs and pcbs. In addition to Shmups.com another good place to keep an eye on is neo-geo.com

Tom

Yeah, I've posted everywhere... :)

So Matsu has a bunch but won't sell them? Why not....? Are they his personal cabs or something?

He has kept a bunch of E2's and AWsd's to use on routes or locations to generate income. He doesn't really import cabs much anymore as people have undercut his prices or organized group buys so it isn't worth the time and effort to import candies. A shame really. He imports from time to time still but its far between. Luckily he had the foresight to diversify abit and I think he prefers servicing routes anyways. I'll ask him how many E2's he has. My guess would be around a dozen.

Tom

Damn.. he wouldn't be willing to part with even one out of a dozen!? If he has any in tip top shape, with a top monitor, I would gladly pay well for it!

If you talk to him ask him, I would buy it immediately, I've got cash in hand!

I'll pass the message along.. I sold my 3rd Egret2 several years ago to Fatchuck here on the forums for either 1k or 1,200 I can't remember, you might try pm'ing him to see if he still has it. Perfect shape, burn free monitor like the two I still have. Cherry picked from the shipments when they first came in. Had I known the shipments would end, I'd have kept it
:(

Also I think there was a guy named Bill420 or something similar on shmups that had bought abunch of E2's then started to sell them off. He still might be floating around somewhere still..

Notice the E2 on the left has a NOS translite marquee or whatever its called. The one on the right is original. The originals tend to get darker. I know I have another one to somewhere just haven't located it yet. Oxtsu on shmups used to put together group orders for japanese parts. I haven't seen him around lately, but I don't spend much time on shmups anymore...other than to check the sales threads for those uber expensive cave pcbs.

Man your just teasing me with those Egret 2 pictures.. :)

Thanks for the leads on those two guys, I appreciate it. I shot them both PMs.

Are you expecting someone with an Egret II for sale to see this thread and contact you?

It isn't going to happen.

There have been 5 Egret IIs for sale in the last week (the most I've ever seen). I mean seriously, I could have bought one if I wanted to. Where have you been if you didn't get any of them?

And to my knowledge four of them are still available on neo-geo.com. Why aren't you buying one? They are all within your price range of "up to 1200$."

Bumping this thread (or the other threads you have on NG.com and Shmups) isn't going to make a cab turn up. This isn't a Pacman cab, it's a cab where probably less than 50 exist in the USA. You are going to have to find one, it's not going to drop in your lap.

First cab I missed, the others were on east coast and not willing to ship.

I have had a few people contact me from these threads, people check the wanted sections infrequently, so I'll have to disagree with you. I had someone contact me who didn't have one for sale, but was considering selling it.

Those are the replies I'm hoping for, a $1200 bounty is good.

Not sure what 4 you are talking about on NG.com, the waseem cabs? Nobody knows what the word is on that deal.. it didn't go anywhere I guess.
