The Taito cocktail cabinets have Taito logos all over the wood, serial number plate, and control panels. I believe your Moon Cresta would be in a Nichibutsu cabinet. They are very similar, but have some subtle differences in design. I don't know how this would affect your coin box. I also can't measure mine properly as mine is damaged.

yea it's a nichi cab.... I did a bunch of research and it looked like it was a taito cab, but I have no logos to indicate otherwise. And the big frikin metal plate that say nichibutsu... lol. Yea I'm not expecting to actually find a coin box, but hey I gotta try right?

I haven't had much luck finding Nichibutsu cocktails. I saw one in my area for way too much money. It just happened to be a Moon Cresta. Good shape, but no better than my Lunar Rescue's cabinet and the monitor had obvious issues that the seller thought he could cover up with bad photos.

dude, it's been a MISSION putting this thing back together. Had to track down legs, freaking player start buttons, glass, monitor trim, feet, those god forsaken glass clips; the last part I need is the coin box. I ended up finding a moon alien on ebay (no legs surprise) and convinced the guy to part it out for me!

I feel your pain there. If this was Japan, we would have far less problems finding parts for these guys. Heck, even Australia and the UK have reproduction parts and mods for Japanese cocktails.

Who thought it was a good idea to put proprietary SQUARE start buttons on the Nichibutsu cabinets??? I think some Phoenix cocktails even had those stupid square buttons. I know Sanwa makes square buttons, but it would be a chore making them work with an old cabinet.

yea dude, I seriously can't believe I actually found those god forsaken square buttons. I'm glad you told me they were proprietary, now I don't feel so bad for not finding them elsewhere. Geez, I had to go and buy some crazy obscure game....

The square buttons were on a small number of different cocktail games. I'm not sure why it was considered a good design decision. It might be easier at some point to open up the square holes and make them fit a circle button. There are plenty of compatible circle buttons out there.

Taito used an interesting early microswitch design for their buttons. Gives a satisfying mechanical clicky sound when pressed. My Player 1 side fire button reacts nicely and actuates really early, so you can barely press it and it fires. Player 2 fire button actuates late for some reason, so 2 player games kind of suck. I'm not sure how to make the switch actuate earlier. I'm guessing Andy from Andy's Arcade would know.

It's funny, a good part of me is sooo thankful for jamma and all it's standardization, but the rest of me enjoys the research and hunting for obscure shit like this....

and by the way, that's all good info; thanks for chiming in on this....

Yeah that might be the right balance: JAMMA/big cartridge/swappable PCB with some pre-JAMMA classics. The obscure stuff is really satisfying to pick up and find parts for, but sometimes it's just too hard trying to repair it all. I thank my lucky stars that I have my grail Lunar Rescue in nearly perfect working order. Cabinet has some battle scars.

If this was a perfect world, I would get a candy cab next to my Lunar Rescue. Rotating monitor, compatible with nearly everything (JAMMA, MVS, CPS, Naomi, Dreamcast), highly versatile controls, good reliability, etc.

Hold on to that Moon Cresta! It might have some quirks, but it's still a great game and has an attractive, compact, lightweight cabinet. I think you'll be satisfied when you complete it.

hmm, maybe I could work with that. What would you want for it?
