"Walt Disney Animation Studios has a high-scoring hit on its hands in this brilliantly conceived, gorgeously executed toon, earning bonus points for backing nostalgia with genuine emotion." - Variety

"...a very, very good all-ages film, not because of the gaming references but because it deliberately pulls back on them before they've overstayed their welcome, replacing them with a surprisingly well-played story of how a person can find redemption in the least expected places. It hit me right in the pixels." - Wired

"...a must-see. To put it simply, Wreck-It Ralph is outstanding. While it may be a bit of a snake-eating-its-own-tail situation, Disney's Animation Studio even managed to outdo Pixar at their own game this year. As a gamer writing for a game website, I may be a bit biased, but Wreck-It Ralph is so much more than its reverence to video games. It's smart, funny, charming, and its plot comes together in stunning fashion. Any attempt to conclude the review with a clever pun about it deserving the high score would simply result in a kill screen. Five stars." - GameZone

I'll be curious to see what Kenneth Turan says (LA Times). He is a lot more critical than most reviewers...maybe too critical but I like that perspective.

Would be nice if this movie created huge interest in these old arcade games and I could sell my Galaga for $10,000.

Same reviews for all movies like that. I still say its gonna be lame

You were pretty quick to get in a snarky answer. Has Ralph hit a nerve? :D

I can't wait to see the first KLOV review and how terribly disappointing it was because Q*Bert's speech bubble had the @ symbol and # symbol out of place...

+1000.

Seeing it this Sunday. I'll let all the nerdy details they got wrong go if the story is good.

If Todd's arcade reality show gets picked up that could really happen. This movie is probably more likely to get people interested in consoles even if it is about arcade characters.

I don't see a reality show exclusively about arcade games attracting much of an audience. It's strictly Youtube material...

I've seen jthe previews and watched a lot of the movie already. Yea its cool that they put classic arcade characters in it but that doesn't make it a good movie. From what I've seen its really and i mean really a kid movie. the little girl in the movie is really annoying.

I bet you have beaten your inner child to death.

"Walt Disney Animation Studios has clearly devoted significant resources and talent to Wreck-It Ralph, recruiting a top-notch cast and a diverse array of animation, visual effects and lighting artists to contribute to the distinct and varied vid-game styles. With a mix of retro eye-candy for grown-ups and a thrilling, approachable storyline for the tykes, the film casts a wide and beguiling net." - The Hollywood Reporter

Um duh...of course this is a kids movie. Why would anyone think it isn't? But the studios have gotten pretty wise to the fact that if they include content relevant to adults then those adults are more likely to take their kids to go see it and adults that have seen it are more likely to tell other adults about it. It doesn't guarantee a good movie at all but it is still a great marketing strategy IMO.

I saw this last week at a press screening in the Lucasfilm theater in the Presidio, which was an awesome experience! They have a Yoda fountain! Some stuff:

*There is some great attention to detail on machine art in the movie, right down to coin mechs and T-molding.
*Tapper (not Root Beer or Budweiser, just Tapper) plays a big part, as does Roadblasters, of all games.
*There's a crucial plot point tied to side art, and as someone who has carefully peeled side art off a machine with a hairdryer, I could appreciate that.
*The hub world (Game Central Station) is a power strip all the games are plugged into, which is a nice touch.
*I constantly wanted to pause the first 30 minutes of the movie and see what else I could identify. Atari and Midway stuff is prominent; lots of Centipede jokes.
*Peter Pepper is totally in it
*This is more of a comedy than say Up or Ratatouille, and jokes were aimed a bit low, but were delivered well. I don't have kids but I think they'll laugh more than the crowd of cynical game journos I saw it with.

Afterwards there was a reception with the director and writers and, most importantly, 2 CRT monitor Fix It machines (pictured). The director's favorite games are Food Fight and Sinistar if I remember correctly (there was ample booze there).

I predict DK machine prices are about to skyrocket.

Edit: Of course the picture is suddenly upside down, that makes sense o_O
