i've got a pin buddy that has a stack of non-working wpc-s and wpc98 boards. he's no good at circuit work, and i am, so we're thinking that i could do some work on them to fix them up. but i have no idea how i would test them other than putting them in my funhouse. does that make sense as a method, or is it crazy talk?

be gentle.

Not sure if you can even put those in a Funhouse at all, it's a different generation machine (WPC-89), and doesn't have the DMD in it.

Not sure what the going rate is on the appropriate WPC test rigs, likely cost a fortune these days.

If you can come up with a good diagnostic scheme, I'd say go for it, but only if you can thoroughly test them out all the way.

there is one for sale in houston...

sorry for the dyslexic 98/89 typing.

so it sounds like i can't test the wpc-s boards but could test the wpc-89 boards in my funhouse? and would i have to swap ROMs to test?

the reason you cant test the wpc s= the s stands for security, meaning there is a security chip unique to that title, so you can use it in another wpc-s game by changing the security chip,

and as for the wpc-89 mpu's you dont need to swap the large square chip(requires a tool anyway) but you would need to swap the roms

OK - thanks. i'll probably snag at least one of the wpc-89 boards from him this weekend and see how that goes - should be much fun :)...

OK, so after having a look at what he has, i understand the situation a bit better :).

he has only driver boards. 4 or 5 of them. various generations, but all williams, and all of them hacked to various degrees, and not working.

i brought home one of them - he said it came out of a judge dredd. it clearly needs a capacitor replaced (C5 i think it is - bulged out at the top, and C11 has already been replaced). the board is a A-12697-3, whereas the ones in my funhouse and addams family are A-12697-1. they look almost exactly the same, except for the flipper control.

so, could i just put that A-12697-3 into my FH or TAF as a test to see if it's working? the alternative is doing all the work at my friend's house, where the actual JD machine is, but i'd prefer to do it here at my own house if possible...

Leon at www.flipper-pinball-fan.be does have some articles online on how to build your own tester boards with leds.
don't know if it's worth to build them for repairing 4 or 5 boards..

if you're looking for broken boards, I still have 2 dmd drivers and a fliptronics2 board for sale..
