Like most people I have one closet space in my house that I affectionatley call "the void"... All my junk goes in there and I rarely actually look inside of it for fear of my personal safety.

Well since the new year is approaching, I finally conqured my fear, and the things I found inside blew me away (in a good way).

I haven't gone through all the stuff yet, but this is what I found so far.

- Killer Instinct Gold for N64 (complete box and inserts)
- Bunch of orginal Game Boy manuals, including titles such as Pac-Man, Yoshi, and Super Mario Land 2

- A briefcase full of unblemished magazines such as Nintendo Power, Tips & Tricks, GamePro, EGM and GameInformer (I was subscribed to all of them).

I took some time to read some of them and it brought a big smile to my face to see the "Exclusive first-look screenshots of Mortal Kombat 2" and Star Fox, as well as read the articles about the war between the 16-bitters SNES and Genesis.

That alone was worth braving the void for. Gosh I feel like I stepped into a time portal.... what a great feeling.

Ya'll probably have a much larger collection than me, but this was like finding a lost treasure and I wanted to share the experience here. Personally I think gaming was at it's peak back then during the great system wars, and it's just not quite the same today

When I cleaned the basement last year I found a PC Gamer from 1997. It is good when you forget what you have and find it later on.

I remember Killer Instinct Gold was sought after at one point, I guess because of the Killer Instinct arcade game. Have you played it yet, does it bring back any good old memories?

Every time I move, I find cool stuff like this. And every time I move, I have to move all my old gaming magazines :) And every time I get them to the new place, I read through a bunch of them again. And it's a great feeling every time. This last time I was reading up on the SNES CD PlayStaytion thing.

When I buy old school video games I prefer to buy out a person's entire video game collection and the first thing I do is read through all of their old magazines. I love them. I keep the posters and the one or two mags I like most and the rest get added to occassional sales as perks to the purchase. Lately, I add some unopened Nintendo Power Paks in with orders. Those are the scratch off cards with tricks & Tips for NES games and come with some NES stickers of Mario, Zelda, etc..

I just read an old GamePro where there was a debate going on about the animation in SNES Super Mario World, because Mario seems to Hit Yoshi on the head to get him to stick out his tongue.

Also one where they were speculating about the changes that would be in the upcoming Super Street Fighter: The New Challengers, like how everyone expected there to be blood splatter in it.

And some guy wrote in wondering why his character name is blue for the second player sometimes.... Ahhhhh good times...

I remember reading the old ones when SF2:CE was still in development. My favorite ones right there. Also had people talking about SF3. LOL This was before Capcom pulled the never ending 2s.

My favorite was the old EGM with M.Bison and Guile on the front cover...Best SF artwork EVER!...:D

Heh, that art was actually used for the Genesis box art.

Loved the old game mags. Nintendo Power,Nintendo Player's guide,GameFan,EGM...good times. Used to love Game Fan BITD because it was a cool read and it seemed that the mag itself was printed on higher quality paper...or something of the sort. I just remember the pages standing out more. Very vibrant colors.

Well, I had to dig up my N64, which was actually in a box in the Garage.... I remember back when I bought the game I was disappointed because I expected the game to be Killer Instinct 1 (sort-of like a closer to arcade port of the SNES version), but in-fact KI Gold was a port of Killer Instinct 2 which back then I had no experience with and the changes were too much.

Seeing the game now though, it really wasn't that bad of a game now that I understand what it was. I wish they would've named it KI2 Gold though as it would've made more sense.

I always liked to go back and read about the "big release" titles that were supposed to do well, but bombed or never even made it to production.

My favorite was a gamer magazine back in the early 90's where someone wrote in and asked why they should buy a genesis or SNES when there would just be a better system released in the very near future. The magazine responded that there would never be a better system released because TVs couldn't handle it and there would have to be a fundamental change in TVs for something like that to happen, so he shouldn't worry and he should go buy that system. The reader was probably pissed when the playstation, xbox, nintendo 64 and the slew of other systems came out for regular old TVs.

Heh, I bought an Atari Jaguar based on a magazines' hype over the then unreleased system claiming how it would have CD quality sound from its cartridges and that it would absolutely dominate any other system including the arcade quality Neo Geo AES.

I'd be willing to bet I had that exact mag right there.. I remember an earlier issue that was like the holy bible to us (was either EGM or Gamepro) when the SF2 was still fresh at the arcades and we were still learning the moves and they released a complete move list and maybe even a few combos. I'm surprised we didn't laminate that thing

Oh god if that ain't the truth right there. I remember for the first time ever buying an actual game mag, because of this issue. I don't remember if this was the issue that showed the concept art for Bison's beat up portrait. Hotter then hell out that summer/fall day, and I got home and sat in my room and just drooled over the pictures. I had SNES and Turbo was to be released later that year. A few years later that thing got chewed up by my dog. Then I got the Mother Mag of that time. I dunno know what ever became of that mag, but I just re-bought it last summer.

Yeah, and I always liked it better than the SNES one. I mean it was cool back then, but looking at it now..... The handslap looks cheezy and Sagat looks like he should he holding a bottle of moon shine. He looks 3 sheets to the wind rather than getting hit.

I'm soo going to make a parody of this game cover one of these days. Maybe in one of my design classes. LOL

^ Yeah. I remember looking at that and wondering for ages on who that guy with the log hair was. But strangely, they changed the story around. )that never happened) Sagat let Dan beat him just to get the whole revenge thing over. Because before the 1st World Warrior tournament Sagat killed his dad. No?

One of the mags I still have was where they show all the new moves in Super Street Fighter 2 and do bios of the 4 new characters... I also have the Capcom VHS tape where they show all the "secrets of the pros" for Turbo and CE.... my gosh was it cheezy, but I loved that thing back in the day... even took it with me to watch in a hotel on a trip once.

It's what motivated me to join my first tournament, LOL.

Same here, Next Generation (I just found most of the whole run of that magazine in my parents attic.) really hyped the Jaguar. I've still got it and most of the games.. I also paid full price for the CD drive.

Lost of "Ultra 64" hype in Next Gen as well :)

Exactly... I'll never forget when I played Killer Instinct in the arcades and saw the demo-mode as the announcer says "Available for your home in 1995, only on Nintendo Ultra 64!"

If we went back in time and told our younger selves that we would be playing on HD/3D displays on systems with wireless multiplayer and built-in storage drives, we would be laughed at.
