I hope you know I'm not trying to be mean. I agree with you, more information on which to make the decision would be nice. But that could be said about so many things in life, no? Here is my take. If it was anything really "worth" anything he would sell it. He wants someone to take it and perhaps knows that if he gives you a pic, you would know it is junk and not take it either. But if you drove all the way you'd likely take it in any case and he wins. There is a very small chance it is someone who knows nothing and it could be the diamond in the rough. That's what the poster is counting on. If I understood correctly 2 hours round trip, I think passing is the right choice...

I'm with the OP, only because its an hour away. It would be a waste of time and resources for him only to find it's something he can't use. If it were in the same town it would be one thing.
Maybe if he explains the situation he might get sympathy from the CL'r.

I doubt the guy is completely indifferent to whether the monitor stays or goes. If he was, he wouldn't have taken the trouble to post the ad. So he clearly wants the monitor gone. At this point he wants it gone bad enough to post a CL ad, but not bad enough to take a picture of it, and especially not bad enough to load it up in a vehicle, take it to a dump, and pay a disposal fee.
Maybe if you wait, and assuming there are no other takers, he may want it gone badly enough to take a picture. It is certainly easier and cheaper to take a picture than to take it to the dump.

If something is free, I couldn't care what it looks like. It's either worth my time to go get it or it isn't. If I can spare an hour each way to go pick up something for free that MIGHT be something I can use, then I'll go get it. If my time is more valuable than a possible "wrong" item is worth, then I probably don't need it that bad, huh?
If I go get it and it's not what I need, I can always sell, trade, or toss it later myself...

I don't believe that putting up a FREE ad on CL means that NO work is involved. A lot of people are giving stuff away because if they didn't it would cost them in dumping fees. Not every neighborhood gets garbage pickup for free, and some people actually have to take all their trash to the dump.
So in fact, he is not giving away anything free, he is SAVING money, by giving it away, and therefore, if he wants it gone, free or not, it is helpful to have a picture.
That being said, not everybody has a digital camera and can even take a picture for that matter.
I say, if the dude wants it gone, and it would help to take a picture, then get off your lazy ass and take a picture for the dude! LOL

It took me 4 days to give away a free 4 year old charbroil grill in nice shape. I had pics and info. Bunch of typical craigslist no-show flakes. I got a non-working motorola b&w in my pong knock off and wouldnt drive 1 hour to get it without a little more info. I dont think youre out of line for asking for a little more info. And I agree with whoever it was that said it would be more of a hassle answering and reading and replying to everyones emails asking for more info and pics, than to just spend 3 fucking minutes to take a picture and add it to craigslist.

It's easy to have something get taken when you want to give it away and nobody responds or comes and gets it.
I had a neighbor that was trying to get rid of a washing machine (worked but was old). Had it in on Craigslist for free, sitting outside at the curb. Sat there for over a week with a FREE sign on it, and nobody came and got it. Finally, he put a sign on it that said "$20", and somebody "stole" it that night....

I dunno... the way I see it is if you explained your situation about being an hour away, and the dude responded in that way, he's sort of a dick...but it IS free. If you simply asked the guy to take pix without the explanation...I'm with the CLer...

i post pics of everything i put on craigslist, free or not. i have gave away cabinets for free and helped load them just because if i could not give them away then i would be the one who has to take it to the dump. on the other hand when i do give a cabinet away i also list what day i will take it to the dump if no one comes and gets it. for some reason the day after i take it to the dump some bonehead always emails me and wants to come get it. i guess thats just craigslist for you.
