Wow! Removing System 1 side "vinyl" is easy!

It took me 30 minutes from start to finish to do both sides. I must be lucky today. I've read that some people had great trouble.

Started pretty easy...

As you can see below, it came off all in one piece!

I was tossing around the idea of just pealing off the Atari logo side art and putting new side art on the original vinyl. I'm very pleased I didn't do that given how easily the vinyl came off. That would not have been a solid base.

A couple more pics from the other side of the cab are on my web site.

Glad to hear it was simple. I might have to do it on one or two of my System 1 cabinets one day. BUT, looking at yours, why did you remove it? It looked in pretty decent condition aside from cut graphic? Was other side there? You are a super Perfectionist? Cheap deal on new repro side art?

Thanks.

The other side had some tears but certainly wasn't terrible. Perfectionist? Definitely not. I have never replaced side art before. When I was hunting for my Marble Madness and ended up only having the option of getting one that worked (not a project), part of the plan was that I would restore it. Now I'm just moving forward with that plan.

Personally I find a good portion of the enjoyment from the hobby is repairing/restoring --- in addition to playing. Since my MM didn't need any repairs, I've decided to put the time I would have spent repairing into a cabinet restoration. It will be my first... crossing fingers it turns out well!

I heard that man. Im the same way. I "get my rocks off" sort of speak hunting these games down and getting them fixed up/working again. Full restos are a pita but you know the machine inside and out when your done.

I am willing to bet in this case that the glue from the vinyl is still on the cabinet. Okay if you are going to put more vinyl on, but bad if you plan to sand and paint.

Is the vinyl that came off sticky on the back?

I thought about this and sanded down the cab. Really nothing special seemed to be on the wood. Seems like the adhesive mostly disintegrated over the years.

There is NO NEED to justify making your games look awesome. None. Plenty of people have the "factory fresh" itch with their machines (this guy, too).
