Would you pay $300 for a non-working Donkey Kong?

i would pay, but depending on condition. assuming the art/cabinet is decent, and depending on the issue. you could get lucky and just have a playing blind due to dead monitor issue, which would be cool. even so, if it's a board problem though, probably won't cost too much to get a new one / or repair. i say go for it, providing the cab's not thrashed.

I sure would, and also the double amount. Hey, I live in Europe and classic dedicated cabs are pretty rare here. I'm searching for games like Tempest, Robotron, Moon Cresta, Moon Patrol, Black widow etc. for quite some time now, and I'm almost sure that I will never find one that I can afford here in europe.

Everytime I see this question it makes me think of two factors: Availability in a certain geographical area and how much the prospective buyer wants the game. There are some games I have overpaid on because I really liked them and hardly ever saw them available in the area. I focus locally for games now since the days of $130 shipping thru Pilot Air are long gone.

Seller ended listing early with no bids. Did anyone local on here buy it?

VERY INTERESTING! I put a bid on this when it ended a couple of weeks back. The winning bidder was a no-show, so it was offered to me as the backup bidder for $461. I told the seller that I wasn't comfortable paying the backup bidder price when the person that I was bidding against wasn't really willing to pay (almost like a shill driving the price up). I told him that I would pay him $400, and he was insulted. He told me that he has already moved to Florida and that his wife is still up here with the games and he can't bring them down to where he has moved. He was a little bit of a jerk about it, but after talking with people on here (in this particular thread even!), I didn't feel like paying more than $400. He said he would just store it, but I knew that he would end up re-listing it. NOBODY had bid on it, and the auction was going to end tomorrow morning. I think that he got cold feet because there were no birders (his buy it now price IS $900, after all...) and he didnt want someone like me to get it for $400 or less (especially before fees, since I made him a cash offer).

The "other" DK that I started this thread about was a non-working machine in Birmingham that a friend of mine found at a yard sale. I think that (from his description) it was in a DK Jr. Cabinet, based upon the fact that he THOUGHT that it was in an orange cabinet. I don't know why he didn't take some pictures to text to me from his iPhone. Anyhow, he hasn't heard from the guy (or his "life partner", either) with the one from the yard sale. He wanted $500 for it, non working. Like I said, these games seem to be a bit harder to come by around here...

I think youre right about ending it early because of cold feet. You can pretty much guarantee it will be re-listed. I also conversed with the seller and did not get a good vibe.

I know theyre hard to come by around here, but I think you were paying too much anyway at $461. It needs a fair bit of cosmetic work.

I'm glad I got my working DK Jr for $250 here in town! I havent seen another since.

It's definitely a regional thing.

I bought mine working for $250, and the monitor is bright and crisp, even. I got lucky, but they usually go for around $300-$400 working here in AZ.

Question is, is it worth $300 to you?

AZ is only a 10 hour trip it a three tanks of gas hmmm Maybe it time to camp out on the AZ craig list. Laughs

... only a 10 hour trip ...

Huh???

I've picked up quite a few of my collection from Cali... Championship Sprint and Rampage from Garden Grove... Tempest (cab only) from LA... Space Invaders from Palm Springs... Um...

It was too much for that DK. Even more so since the dude was a douche about your "lowball" offer. It will be one of those games that the guy will let rot because he's convinced he's sitting on a gold mine. Whatever...you can get a comparable one for a way better price than that.

To be sure, there are DK's going for fair prices, it just seems that none of them are doing so in this area. It's not like I can't already PLAY Donkey Kong in my arcade. Quite the contrary, I have no less than FOUR different cabinets in my arcade that will play the game. I have it in an upright multi-jamma on the ArcadeShop board (along with DK2 and the others), in a dedicated Ultracade cabinet where I purchased an officially licensed copy of the game, in a multigame Cocktail cabinet and on the MAME emulator in the custom pedestal console cabinet. This is why I have no problem waiting for a decent cab at a good price to come along. I just want a dedicated cabinet...

An average looking machine working bring about 500 around iowa.

I'd pay 300 if it was solid and didn't require too much work.

It just cost me more than that to build one. After building this one I wouldn't be surprised if the problem was a wiring issue, especially if non arcade folks have it. Any number of the harnesses could have come loose or given their shitty design, could have pins broken off. I mean how many separate wires run off that board? Monitor, audio, PS for each board, CP, Coin Door, Coin Counter, Service Switch. Oh and let's not forget about the ribbon cables.

Like I said, it cost me more to build one. $300 for a machine that is easy to work on with an abundance of part suppliers seems fair, given the difficulty you have had finding one. Ultimately it's what it's worth to you.

I paid $250 for mine, not working but all there. Monitor does work and cabinet is solid.
Needs board work, paint, art and love.

This is how it works for me:

All the games I buy that need work, I see later in better condition for a few dollars more than what I paid.

All the games I don't buy because they need work, I never see again or at a price I'm willing to pay.

Honestly , I don't know why people ask other people if they should buy a game. There are way too many personal factors that go in to that decision including your emotional connection to that game, skill set to get it working and looking good , geographical location etc, If you like it and want it then go for it. Guys on here like to pretend that they never pay more than $50 for a game. At the end of the day, the only one that needs to be happy with that purchase is you. And I am sure you will be.
