So if you were having a hard time pulling together enough money to pay your property tax or whatever and you had a medium to crummy condition working classic game that you could sell for, say $400. But you thought you could part the thing and get $700 or $800 for it. Would you do it?

Be honest.

Well, I've yet to run into a game thats worth more in parts than it is whole. It also takes alot less effort to sell the game whole and local than it does to part it out, list parts, package and ship parts.

On the other hand, if you need a quick buck and can make more on a part-out (and sometimes youll get more interest that way), do what you gotta do.

Personly i would sell games as a hole before i Ever parted any out of cash. Really though you have been buying alot of games recently too be having trouble with bills.

Think Star Wars. Not sure what the value of all the parts would be but they are all working and I would think the parts would add up to more than $500.

But yeah it would take more work. And the cab is restorable.

I've just about broke even on the various games I bought and sold. I'm about $50 in the hole by my calculations and after selling this game I should be ahead of the game.

Edit: Plus we had a rather large unexpected expense that just happened.

I don't like seeing a working game parted out,but if you are really in a bind you have to do what's best for you and your family.I would think that if it really came down to it,anyone on here would part out any of their games in order to help out their family.

Well now your gonna get slammed with "dont do it", "have a heart", so on and so on...

I don't think that would really affect me one way or the other. But for the record I'm not planning to do this. But in a way it's tempting. So I thought it would be interesting to see who would or wouldn't do it. Or at least who would fess up if they would. :)

you may need to hold onto that star wars and dump the black widow. might get a bite that way.

Sell it as a whole if possible. But sadly enough bills come first. With that being said I've had more than one pole position or space duel that was worth more as parts just saying
Either way good luck

You own it, it's yours to do with what you wish. However, it kind of negates the whole "video arcade preservation society" thingy that's going on here...so I'm not sure what responses you were expecting. When times get tough I'm sure there's a lot of things people would do to survive (see - plane crash on a mountain - no food - etc). I'm sure a local or semi-local collector that is willing to help would buy a game from you..and later let you buy it back from them when you have the money. If you were closer I'd do it to save a game...and to help out a fellow collector in need.

Thanks for the thought but I'm not in dire straights to that extent. I'm not looking for advice since I already know what I'm going to do. I truly just wanted to hear from others what they would do. Just out of curiousity.

Maybe but i'll guarantee you there will be several forum members that have been on the "don't part it" bandwagon that send you pm's looking for parts.

Agreed (and I know you know this first hand). And some will say "one died to save many others". But most will still show their disgust in parting out a game like Star Wars, even those that want the parts. With that said, his game is his business.

Now do I believe its worth more in parts than it is whole and working? No. Do I believe it will get more interest (or a quicker sale) in a part-out? Maybe.

Just think you can sell the parts from the Star Wars then turn the cab into a chair with a phone and make another $500.:D
