So I have a chance to potentially pick up a Championship Sprint for a pretty good deal. It was one of my favorite games as a kid and probably the only driver I would consider owning. The only problem is the owner says the monitor is not working aka playing blind. I'm not a monitor guru or one to pick up non-working projects. Is this something that is easily fixable or it's too broad to really gauge? Thoughts and opinions?

Atari System 2 is a medium res system. The monitor is no harder to work on, but if you need a replacement it's much harder to find and more expensive to boot. What is a "pretty good deal"?

Yeah, I'm not completely lost when it comes to monitors. I'd say I'm knowledgeable enough to discharge, take things apart, solder, put things back together, etc. So it's good to know med-res is no different, but bad to know they are not as easy to come by. So I was just wondering if it would be walking into a money pit or it's something that's easy to address.

A pretty good deal is a pretty good deal. But if I'd have to buy a replacement monitor for this thing, I'm not sure. :)

If the deal is real good say sub $100 range I have no problems jumping in on a project, but yes always leery or the money pit syndrome..:004_sbiggrin:

buy it and haul it over to me for my working pole position. swap

or hook a brother up if you don't want it.

It'll need a cap kit and while you're at it touch up solder joints. The med res 49XX is apparently notorious for bad solder joints. Good thing that's a nearly free fix, just takes some time. My Paperboy had issues, fixed my a cap kit, then would play blind - found a bad solder joint. For this game, I wouldn't figure the lack of monitor working into the price too much, but I tend to be optimistic about that.

I recently fell into the money pit with this game. I bought it for $150 bucks with no picture on the monitor. Turns out the flyback is bad and i haven't been able to find a replacement flyback for the Atari Disco monitor that was inside.

I ended up buying a BILLABS TRI-MODE monitor for about $350. The color looks great, but sometimes the picture jumbles up at the title screen. It's fine during game play though. Anybody know how to fix that? Or where i can get a replacement flyback?

I also rebuilt the wheels, pedals, and cabinet side art. I have waay to much money into this game.. It's a good thing i really love it!

Get it! I wanted to buy one once in much worse condition.

..I have rather fond memories of this game..

Yup, as do I. Man, the candy store/diner in my home town (R.I.P.) had one that I played the crap out of. It was right next to a Double Dragon and Golden Axe. Man, those were the days. :)

Nostalgia Vs. Risky Money Pit....decisions...decisions....

Yeah, it was a money pit. But now i have a minty game that's always been one of my favorites. I took the time to make sure the controls were spot on. I love spinning the wheels like mad. That's what the games about! Get it if you love it...

Alright. I'm convinced. If for some reason it doesn't work out for me, I'm sure there will be plenty of guys who'd be willing to take up the challenge. TronGuy has dibs though. :)

if its cheap enough its worht it just for the monitor dead or not. THose med res 19" monitors are damn near worth thier weight in gold.

Jess, did you get this?

Not yet. I wasn't able to pick it up over the weekend. The seller is holding it for me until I can get to it. I'll also need to coordinate and find help as I've heard these Atari cabs weigh a ton. For those who haven't met me, I'm 5' 6" and 140. :D
