Would you buy a game simply because you have fond memories of playing it when you were a kid, even though you know that the game play would not live up to your memories?

I am currently considering buying a Kee Sprint 1 driving game. The problem is I seriously doubt that I will play it much, I am tight on room, and I will almost certainly take a loss if I decide to sell it down the road. The thing is that I have such fond memories of playing it when I was a little kid...I'm torn on what to do.

Yes, as long as the price was right. My fond memories are no match for the power (or lack there of) in my wallet.

It's why I bought a Tron upright back in 2002 when nobody wanted them. I remembered the glowing blue handle from when I was younger. The gameplay never interested me at first, but it gets a little better when you can get up to the higher levels.

Memories of a game are what keeps people in the hobby. You don't want your arcade to be full of games other people like, just you. Besides, you never know what will become popular. When I first rebuilt my Altered Beast cab, it didn't get any respect, now more of the big names on here have the game (and others in the system16 line) and the game is slightly more sought after. The late 70's black and white games aren't easy to find and some of the members here have a deep respect for them.

That is why I ended up with 4 original Pac Mans, for some reason it just brings up good memories, seeing that yellow cabinet and lit up marquee.

Pretty much the only reason why I have a Space Invaders... :)

And I want an upright yellow Pong at some point in my life... For nostalgia alone.

And... Whatever type of game I were to get for nostalgia alone... Would need to be very, very old.

my multiple year search for Great Swordsman is purely nostalgia. though I do really like the gameplay as well.

Isn't it all nostalgia?

Everything we like emulates. Its the that old look, feeling, smell of ozone that drives every purchase, trade, and mile I drive in search of boxes.

If I were a smart man I build a mame or finally buy an arcade legends and get it over with. However you can't take money with you, and the excitement of putting another game into the collection is worth every nickel.

Blah blah blah....ect. ect.. Yes it is the nostalgia? You really didn't want to hear the rest the others will say it.

At this point I don't have the room or money for "nostalgia" games, if the gameplay stands the test of time and I'll play it I want it, nostalgia is nice but usually collects dust.....

Had a guy see my collection of games and say " I can play all of those on my laptop for nothing".
I said sure you can just like I can get a Playboy magazine and jerk off to the pictures but how about having sex with the real thing?

You either "get it" or don't, people who don't "get it" play mame on their laptops.

My games are PRIMARILY for nostalgia. Certain games can NOT be emulated, and MUST be experienced in the original cabinet and with the original control scheme on properly working controls. When i look at a mint original classic, it brings back feelings of my youth. Just trying to REMEMBER the games does not deliver the same feelings...

Alot of mine are due to nostalgia... I also tend to lean more to the games that can't be really emulated on Mame due to the controls. One of my wants is a Sit-down Star Rider. Yeah some people think this the worst laser but you know what I many fond memories playing it at a dive pizza joint....

This.

I have a saying. "Nostalgia is a bitch"

What else is going to make people spend thousands on boxes of obsolete technology, and thousands more just keeping them working?

I remember playing Guzzler back in the day. Only ever saw it at one place, approximately 28 years ago. I have played it in MAME. I know it would play better in an original cabinet but I am not sure if it would live up to the memories. I would buy one anyway.

Definitely nostalgia for sure. Playing dragons lair on blu ray got me to this site trying to find any info on building my own or finding an original. found out the cost and moved on to my other favorite operation wolf and bought one two weeks ago. and believe it or not i just made a deal to pick up my second game on saturday for great price. i guess its true im hooked for life and i can thank old nostalgia. its a great feeling after a long hard day at work and dealing with everyday life.

what do you think, I restored a mortal kombat because I like the gameplay?

well I do. But thats besides the point. LOL I grew up on the game and so did my friends. thats why im glad I did it.

Its all about notalgia
