Worst pet peeve in an arcade

I hate it when the pinball games are set up with the playfield being too steep. so the filppers can barely get the ball to the back of the machine, let alone up a ramp.

Dirty, cigarette burns in the control panels...hated that.

Also, running out of money near the end of a game, and then running over to the change machine to get more money to continue, only to get the change, come back, and it had already counted down to zero. GAME OVER.

OOOOOOHHHH! I HATED THAT ONE!!!

Trickman FTW.

My list:

  • Someone bumping into you while you're playing, almost knocking you over. At the very least, this might distract you and cost you a life.
  • Smokers...yes, some places allowed this. I'm very allergic to all forms of tobacco, so this was something that caused me to have to leave.
  • If a game was popular, sometimes they'd place it so you'd have to use 2 quarters to play.
  • Change machine running out or jamming.
  • The inevitable person that feels that they have to do a "play-by-play" like Howard Cosell while you're playing.

When the game you've been playing, and getting really good at, is suddenly gone.

I grew up in a small town, so rather than an arcade, we'd go to the corner store to play video games. We used to get really good at whatever game was there and be soooo close to beating it, then the next day we'd show up to discover they've rotated that game out for different one.

Asking my mom how much of my allowance that I was able to use for Arcade fun, only to have her tell me some ungodly low figure that would have only let me play a few games. So I would end up taking 3 or 4 times that amount to the arcade and after the afternoon spent there, to dread the inevitable punishment when I got home for spending more than I should have.....lol

Also going up to a game that costs 3 times the amount, only to find that the controls didn't work and the operator didnt' give a shit or take it out of service.

And the Dragons Lair game that cost $2.00 to play when it first came out, and by the time I figured out the controls, my $2 bucks were gone just as fast as I put them in the machine.

I will never forget the day i walked into our local Arcade walked up to my Fav game (Defender), put a Quarter in and quickly went WTF???? It had been converted to a Double Dragon. That was the 1st time and unfortunatley not the last time i ever saw one of fav games converted. To me that was pretty much the begining of the end, it didn't take long before all the games were Jama and ticket games, that was the day the Arcades Died to me.

But on a positive it was the reason i started to collect games and built my collection. I also have a soft spot for de-converting games even though expensive but probably because of this past experience. I enjoyed the games so much that i know the only way to continue to play the classics was to find, fix them, and own them.

Games not working properly is the worst. I would go to play After Burner, and the hydraulics would be messed up, so I would be sitting at a 45 degree angle while trying to play

The dozen or so people STILL sitting in front of that Dragons Lair game. Of course that feeling only lasted about a month or so but I'd never seen so many people interested in watching OTHER people people play a game.

When Dragons Lair first came to our local arcade they had a big screen TV hooked up to it so EVERYONE could watch you screw up and die. Same goes for Space Ace.

Putting money in a Spyhunter Cockpit only to find that the car would stick on the RH side of the road and you couldn't get it back on the road. Steering wheel borked up for weeks.

1. Getting hosed by a game like Defender or BattleZone. Something that either kills you in 30 seconds or looks cool but is boring.

2. Walking in to play a game, and finding suckola JAMMA games instead of the games I liked. Didn't know what JAMMA was back then, of course.

3. Friends asking if I wanted to go play some arcades. Even back then I would think "Huh? That's a video game, short bus." My struggle continues to this very day.

Kids coming up to watch and pointing at the screen or pressing a button by accident. Happened all the time.
In my arcade now? I hate people that bang on the plexi or glass. Or people that just slam the joysticks.

  • Pins with broken flippers
  • Kids who won't leave you alone while playing a pin
  • Know it alls at the fighters
  • Know it alls wanting $5 for move lists for the fighters
  • Jammed coin mechs
  • Getting shocked
  • Broken controls

I guess the putting quarters up must have died after the mid 80s. There were hardly any arcades left by me after 86 or so and I never got into the fighter games so I don't know but in the early 80s everyone knew what the quarters meant.

My biggest peeves were when a favorite game was gone and games with broken controls.

Guys trying to pick me up in the middle of a game!! No common courtesy there... as if they thought they were more important than my high score

Quarters getting eaten!

People assuming because I was I girl that I would suck at playing games. (admittedly I do suck at some!)

The games that won't coin up or other wise don't work correctly - sucked back in the day; still sucks today, though today it is mostly pins.
