So the events of last night prompted me to wonder if anybody else has had a less than stellar experience when in the midst of that great find or when transporting their new addition.

I was doing a run from Vancouver to Seattle picking up a needed punchout cabinet (with both monitors running superman) to restore a conversion. The drive was good and border crossings both ways were painless. When I arrived home it was just starting to get dark and I was tired from the multiple hours of driving.

I unloaded the game from the truck with no issues and then came the dolly to bring it inside. My helper had walked up ahead to hold open the door so I was left to fend for myself. Mid transport to my door the wheel on my dolly gave way dropping the right side. This in turn forced the cabinet to follow suit. The cabinet decided to use my leg as its saving grace knocking me to the ground and then making a thunderous crash beside me.

I hopped back up with my leg in pain and cabinet in an unknown state. We lifted the cabinet back up and the cp had popped out scratching the plexi in the process. Everything else looked ok except for chips and scrapes from the t molding and side art. I finished bringing the game inside and then lifted my pant leg to discover a little surprise.

After nice visit to the hospital all I wanted to do was get home, check on my game and go to sleep. Not even 5 minutes from my house the local law enforcement turned on its blue and reds behind me. Wouldn't you know I had the pleasant "power trip" variety who could barely contain his anger that he had to pull me over and provide me with a speeding ticket. He was trying to push me to react in some way and I just told him that I was heading home after being released from the hospital.

I received my license back and a $196 ticket with a nice helping of "I don't pull people over for fun".

Got home and did a once over to the game for any damage. Plugged it in and everything worked fine except for two of the buttons. Had a few beers to wash down my T3's and sorrows and went to sleep. I added a pic of my leg for your viewing pleasure :p

You went to the hospital for that? Must have some nice insurance? I won't step foot in the Hospital unless something is obviously broke or just barely hanging on by a thread.

:)

BTW - Here are some shots of the "worst" I got from a cab:

Started like this:

After a bit of MRSA infection... it ended up like this:

WOUND11-24-08.jpg

There is a tasty little thread about it here somewhere.

Basically... Tempest door falls on my leg and makes a nice little "ding"... one thing leads to another and 2 weeks later you get what you see on the top photo... 3-4 MONTHS later I get to where they get to cut it all out...hence photo #2.

Now... stop your whining.

;)

Oh...and here is how it looked BEFORE I realized I had a major problem (note the swollen foot):

Dude that totally blows!!! I cant believe it got even worse after you got released! When i txted you and you said you were in the Hospital and told me what had happened i figured that was about as bad as it could get! Dont you just love power tripping fuzz. ;)

Sounds like in the end, that was a pretty expensive game! Take care of that leg and heal up buddy so we can go hunting more games! :)

should have told him you banged his wife for fun, that's what you were speeding to go do when he pulled you over.

White smoke billowing from the engine compartment, 100 miles from home at 11pm when I had work the next day. It was NOT a fun night and my car suffered permanent transmission damage. It still has lethargic acceleration and hesitates to go when it's cold and there isn't much I can do about it.

On the upside, that trip netted me two grail cabinets (including my #1), another not-so-grail that I really wanted for a whopping $35 and a grail game board in a converted Konami cabaret. Boom, instant gameroom!

Man that must have hurt. I had a very bad experience last week while getting a game. Coming back with it in a wind storm, my brand new trailer was blown over with the game inside. Good news is that the HUO Gravitar did not get damaged in the roll over, bad news is the new trailer, less than a month old, is pretty much totaled.

I posted pics here. http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=220268&highlight=Kawydud&page=2

not my finest hour..

Drove to the Mexican border to pick up three pinball machines a month ago.
The night before in Los Angeles at a friend's house I consumed too much beer.
was violently ill, and had to stop several times to puke.
Arrived late at my destination, a proper english gentleman with hundreds of pins in his warehouse, Tommy, Theatre of Magic, you name it.
By this time I was projectile vomiting and literally covered in puke when I arrived.
I handed the wad of bills to the horrified gentleman, and said:

"It all there, you can count it"

he said, uh, thats ok, I trust you, and beat a hasty retreat.
I loaded the pins and left, while his staff looked on in amusement.

poor trailer but glad your game was ok

The twisted ball connection is nuts. Good thing it didnt fly into your truck or anything.

Good thing it was only one end. Didnt the guy offer to hose you off or give some of that famous mexican water to rinse your mouth out?

Pukey car ride does not sound fun :0====

A couple years ago I picked up a couple of AGE Challenger Cranes. I was bringing them
home on the back of my Ranger. I did a half ass strapping job because it was pouring
out. I took a turn to hard going up a hill (it didn't seem hard but must have) and
both cranes flew off the side of the truck and slid down the wet hill.

While I messed up the cranes, I luckily didn't put a scratch on my truck
and most luckily no one was behind me.

My very first pickup...I was pulling a 25" Dynamo up the ramp into my truck...buddies pushed a little too hard, I lost my footing and the game fell over on top of me, with the hand truck as well. I had a bruise across my chest and both arms.

Close calls:

Unloading my Mario Bros from the truck by myself...something slipped and the cab slid sideways off the hand truck...I literally had one hand on the side of the truck and one hand holding the entire cab from falling 3 feet onto asphalt, and all I could do was just hold it. Ironically, no joke, one of my friends randomly showed up right at that moment, and helped stand it back up into the truck. Talk about the right place at the right time.

Moving my games to my new place I started to trip and ended up running backwards with my Tokyo cop, literally landing in the seat for it thankfully. Thought for sure it was gonna be a repeat of the Dynamo, but with a much heavier cab!

Funny:

Hauled a cheap dryer once...strapped it onto a trailer and went up the street. Stopped at a stop sign and I guess the trailer flexed and the strap came loose...the dryer took a tumble and slid down the street past me. Ironically it still works :)

I don't speed at all anymore. I can't stand these useless thugs, and that is about the only time I can't control my temper. I decided it was better for me to just stay away from them. I haven't landed in jail yet, but have had a couple of shouting matches by the side of the road that probably should have ended that way.

On topic, I think I have bled a little or bruised myself on just about every game pick up. I am just not patient enough to avoid it I guess. The only game that has been hurt was a paperboy. The guy delivered it, and I made the mistake of letting him pick it up on the dolly. It fell and ended up rolling over into the bushes. The bottom back panel on the back was ripped off, but the rest was OK.

No offers of water or any sympathy, in fact, I have tried calling him and emailing him , but he won't return any of my phone calls or emails.

You only have one chance to make a first impression, now I am shunned like a leper.

It wasn't a pickup per se. I was loading games to go to the Houston Arcade show. The liftgate on the truck must have been used to pick-up a tank or two cause it had a definite tilt to it. We were trying to hurry and were doing 2 at a time. One guy ran the controls and the other guy braced the cabinets. I was bracing the cabinets when the other guy's thumb slipped off the up button and the liftgate jolted. They both started to go, so I had to pick one and watched the Joust take a 3 foot header off the liftgate to the concrete. I loaded it figuring it would be toast when we got to the show. Well there was some road rash on the t-molding, but the monitor never looked better. I guess falling on its face knocked all the crud off the guns. By the way I still recommend a rejuvenator if your monitor needs a little work. :D

I once walked off of the back of a dock high truck with a MsPac/Galaga (I was walking backwards). I ended up blacking out for about 5 minutes and needed 18 staples in my head!

Sorta like when you give the side of your old TV set a good swift kick and it makes it look better :D
