Not true. I mentioned Mr. Do... however I don't find their sequels "horrible"... but certainly not the genius that is the original. The one not mentioned that belongs on the list is Mr. Do! It had 3 sequels, all of them sucked ass. And Mr. Do! is a masterpiece of a game.
I can't really comment on the gameplay because I can't remember playing it, but Joust 2 definitely didn't enjoy even a fraction of the success of the original.spy hunter 2 had to be the biggest disappointment.
But I would offer up for consideration:
joust 2
I'm in this camp. I know there are lots of Millipede fans, but I greatly prefer Centipede.Millipede. Centipede was such a perfect pure adrenaline game. Trying to add a bunch of clunky bells and whistles (DDT Bombs, the bug that marches in sideways, Mushrooms with Peyronie's disease, the screen and mushrooms advancing downward, everything sped up) to an already perfect game kind of made it a shitty game. I know there's a lot of Millipede lovers out there, and some will say it's better than Centipede because it's faster and more frantic, but I say that's the exact reason it sucks. Centipede was perfection, Millipede just tries too hard.
Everything about Defender/Stargate is awesome except me when I play it. I'll never be good at it, but watching a pro wipe out the astronauts and go balls out in deep space is completely badass.stargate, it sucks just as bad as Defender, but more because it has 1 more button.
the worst part about Joust 2 was it was vertical. all those generation games Williams put out were apparently all intended to be kit games but I don't think any of them were successful enough for them to put that plan in motion. beyond all that, Joust 2's biggest problem I think was it tried to do too much. the addition of the System 11 sound board to provide music and digitized sounds/voices was easily the best part of the game for me.I can't really comment on the gameplay because I can't remember playing it, but Joust 2 definitely didn't enjoy even a fraction of the success of the original.
Stargate and defender are awesome 8 bit distractions and a good test for the robot fingers of the future .I still wonder if it's the kill or the chase or the near misses that intrigue me. It might be that just getting the fire button going fast enough gets your hart pumping . Strike Force suckedEverything about Defender/Stargate is awesome except me when I play it. I can see hating it based on difficulty, but that's it.
I agree with you about the extra (Inviso) button -- Williams added it for pure spite.
I have a newfound respect for Joust 2 after watching someone at Galloping Ghost who happened to be really good at it. He was flipping through the different mounts back and forth for different strategies. Joust 2 is another one of those I had the flyer but never saw one bitd (lived in Chicagoland area mind you). Timing of this release is weird too, '86??? Graphics don't seem up to snuff for 'round this era - I agree... the audio is top notch though.the worst part about Joust 2 was it was vertical. all those generation games Williams put out were apparently all intended to be kit games but I don't think any of them were successful enough for them to put that plan in motion. beyond all that, Joust 2's biggest problem I think was it tried to do too much. the addition of the System 11 sound board to provide music and digitized sounds/voices was easily the best part of the game for me.
I second Double Dragon III. I didn't play that in contemporary 1990, but my grandpa got The Combatribes and I rank that up there with the best beat em up games. though it didn't have the fit and finish of Capcom it was better than Konami's rando casual garbage hit detection games prior to X-Men.
I never achieved a mastery of that hardware generation. I can't tell if they increased the color depth or if they were just that masterful at making such primitive technology look better.I have a newfound respect for Joust 2 after watching someone at Galloping Ghost who happened to be really good at it. Didn't know Williams wanted go the kit route as well. Mystic Marathon was one I saw rarely; Zero Wing, my buddy had in a Stern Frenzy cab - that game just sucks.
Combatribes is Renegade II even more so than Double Dragon
I actually like the speed, look and sound/music in KI 2. Plus, it was one of my first N64 game (KI GOLD) so, I have a biased.Killer Instinct 2 was worse than KI in pretty much every way
Damn, just saw this... was more active on RGVAC than here.I never achieved a mastery of that hardware generation. I can't tell if they increased the color depth or if they were just that masterful at making such primitive technology look better.
I don't recall seeing you here before, but I went to NIU years ago and I miss DeKalb and Sycamore very much. lol
