We are extremely proud and excited to let you know that Aart van Vliet, official World Record holder on Galaxian will attempt to set a NEW WORLD RECORD at Eurocade 2012 !!!

Aart was already our guest at Eurocade 2011 and we were able to witness some mind-blowing gameplay by him on the most brilliant NAMCO shooter ever...

Apart from this, Aart turned out to be a really nice guy and we had some nice talk during Eurocade and then we popped the question (sorry, I forgot who it was) if he would be willing to try his own record on home ground and to our joy he agreed !

The Eurocade team feels that this is an excellent combination of events. It means a lot of great publicity for Eurocade and of course Aart will have a great setting to push his record even further.

The details still need to be worked out. It looks like we will give him a good spot in the bar area (this will be the only game there) so the visitors will be able to follow his progress. We will put the gameplay on the beamer so everyone can follow clearly.

We are working to get the attempt on a live stream so fans around the world will be able to view it live !

I hope you guys are as excited as we are !

Eurocade is a meeting of European collectors of classic arcade (video) games.

A meeting, where the goal is that collectors bring one (or more) of their games with them so all of them can enjoy eachothers' games...
But of course, the first, and most important goal, is to bring together people from all over Europe who enjoy collecting, restoring, fixing and playing those classic arcade videogames.

We already have confirmations of people coming from The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Denmark and even Hungary !!!

That interview was great . Galaxian is one of my favorite games and getting all those gameplay tips at the end was cool . I hope theres a live stream .

I think we will manage a live stream. The problem is there is no Internet connection in the building (not even a telephone line) since its a clubhouse.

So it looks like we will be using a 3G connection but since it's my employers' connection I wonder how much data an -at least- 6 hours live video stream will generate.....

It was indeed a great interview, the funny thing was that I hadn't read it entirely and that Eurocade and I were mentioned by Aart :)

I must say that Aart's quote
"Andre's Galaxian machine played like a dream."
really made me smile. He already mentioned it to me at Eurocade 2011 and it is great to hear that from a World Champion :) I always take great care to get the controls of games perfect or as perfect as possible. Nothing is more annoying than loosing lives because of poor controls.

What I find amazing is that his tips recommend shooting the ships that aren't attacking. You get way more points if you wait for them to attack you before you shoot them. But he is the expert. :D

Yup I was surprised about that too when he told me and I always did like you but he told me the risk to miss one is too high... I will dig up a video where you can see him play at Eurocade and seriously he is like a machine hitting an alien with almost every single shot....and still chatting with people while doing it :)

Ok guys, we will be streaming this !!!!

Here is the link for the channel:

http://ustre.am/NM3d

Ustream has free apps for iOS and Android and of course you can watch from PC and Mac via the browser too.

The "bad" thing is that there is no fixed Internet connection at the location so we will have to use a 3G connection that is specced to 1 Mbps upload speed (probably a theoratical speed), but we will have to do with it).

Coming Sunday August 26 we will be testing the entire World Record set up including cabinet, UPS, cameras etc. and also the streaming. Aart will be there too for some practice games and to see if everything is set up properly and nicely for him :)

We will be using a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Source) during this record try because we want to make as sure as we can that we have no spikes or glitches or even power-out (pretty rare here) to kill the try. Of course the battery capacity is limited, but we figured it would be a smart idea.

You are invited to watch the test broadcasts next Sunday and report your viewing experiences.
Times are not entirely fixed and remember local time is GMT+1

Gonna try something here....

Ustream puts ads in the video when broadcasting from a free account.

A basic account that will prevent you guys from seeing ads would cost $99

If enough of you guys chip in a couple of bucks we can do this broadcast ad-free.

The Eurocade team puts 10 bucks in the pot to start with, so only 80 to go.

Go to the donations page here: http://www.eurocade.eu/Eurocade/Donations.html

and click on the Donation button to donate a buck or two....if everyone who wants to watch it does, it'll be without the nasty ads !!

Come'on people, I have two donations so far, both from guys that WILL be at Eurocade so don't even have any interest in getting the stream ad-free....how is that for support !

So....two donations of $5 received means 70 bucks to go...

Thanks !

We did a little testing today and that was a good idea as we learned a couple of things that did and didn't work out as we hoped.
We will (have to) fix that before friday....

At least we luckily had the CORRECT ROM set that Aart wants to play and also the one that he played at Fun Spot during his World Record.
It is also the "official" version that is set to 3 Galaxip and a bonus Galaxip at 7000 points.

We also tested the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Source) succesfully. It first had to charge the batteries but I tested it about half an hour ago. Pulling the plug didn't crash the game, tried it several times and it made the Galaxian run fine without mains power.

I tested how long it would last and let's say that it gives us a minute or 5 to replace any blown fuses in the mains circuit, should that be the cause of any outage. We'd need a more powerful UPS if we want it to run longer than that (or maybe the batteries weren't entirely full yet) but the place is not that big and 5 minutes should be enough. The UPS starts beeping when mains fails, so we can't miss it for sure...

At least it gives it protection against surges and spikes and a short mains outage....I still wonder why about any WR attempt I have seen is done without one of these....esp. in the US where mains problems are much more often happening, then again you must be lucky enough to have access to one of these ;)

We also adjusted the fire button a tiny bit to make it perfect (or close to perfect).

Regarding the streaming we will have to find another solution than the tablet hanging on the grill of the speaker of the cab. The thing is that the stream sometimes seems to stop for no apparent reason. We of course cannot "reset" that while Aart is playing next saturday, so I think we will have to go back to the initial plan of a separate camera and a computer to do the streaming.

Here's a picture of today...

Looks pretty great.....who will beat who....man or machine..... ;D

We will be putting black foil to the windows (behind the curtains) so the place will be a lot darker than this and also dress up the area nicely...man those curtains are ugly !

I haven't met many World Champions (saw some on film though..........) and I must say Aart must be one of the kindest around :)
