World Record Attempts List Finalized for 2011 NW Pinball and GameRoom Show

Eric Akeson asked me earlier today (and I was out for a bit and just got home) to post an announcement that the world record attempts list for the 2011 NW Pinball and GameRoom Show is now full, and the request lines are now closed.

This is the latest we've ever extended the deadline for record attempt requests. With the show only three weeks away we have our hands full ensuring that 1) all of the requested games are available from the local collector community, 2) they can pass muster with standard score submissions processes and rules, such as the right ROM set revision, etc., 3) are in good working order, and 4) that they are definitely coming to the show. That's a lot to accomplish in the short time frame that is left. Also, the show's logistics team needs sufficient time to plan and finalize truck routes for games pickup, and in order to facilitate that the cutoff date for submitting any new games to the show will be May 20-ish, which is only a week away, and that's only two weeks before showtime. Record attempt games need a longer lead time to ensure all of the above happens.

The official list of world record attempts for the 2011 NW Pinball and GameRoom Show can be viewed here:

http://www.nwpinballshow.com/world-record-attempts

After two months of fielding requests we have a record number of world record attempts happening at the show this year and cannot accommodate any more machines or players. Barring any unforeseen circumstances we are going to have fourteen (14) machines in the high score area of the show. Typically we have no more than ten (10) maximum, and in past years 3-4 of them ended up not being used whereas this year that does not appear to be the case. Also, we need to leave sufficient room around each game cabinet for camcorder setups, in addition to adequate room to maneuver around each cabinet to get into the back doors and film dip switch settings, etc. And all of this happens while 3000 members of the general public fill the rooms to play over 350 arcade video games and pinball machines. It's gonna be nuts!

As a reminder, there will be no official referees for any score keeping entity at the show. Eric Akeson will be overseeing the record attempt area and assisting with game preparation before attempts to ensure correct settings, etc. (Twin Galaxies' rules are typically the standard bearer here) as well as assisting with recording setups. I will be assisting Eric off and on throughout the weekend. There will be occasional "off" times for the record attempt area to allow for meals and breaks, etc. This is, after all, a social event above all else.

NOTE: It is each gamer's responsibility to provide their own video recording equipment. We will have adequate power to accommodate multiple camera setups. There may be a camcorder available for a gamer to use in the record attempt area on a first come first serve basis and if you ask nicely (Eric is bringing his setup and I am bringing mine), but this is in no way a guarantee of camcorder availability. Best to bring your own gear rather than assume you'll be able to borrow someone else's. Also, if your record attempt is expected to last more than an hour or so I'd recommend bringing a UPS battery backup with you just in case. We have never experienced a power outage at the show, nor an accidental unplugging of a game, but there can be a first time for everything. Be prepared.

Thanks to all the awesome Pacific Northwest game collectors for accommodating games requests, and good luck to everyone who will be going for record scores at the show.

Just got off the phone with Eric Akeson and we have a few changes to the record attempts area...

First, Make Trax is being dropped. Eric spoke with Walter Day about it and Walter says he's not good enough at the game anymore to warrant taking up space with this, and he won't have the time anyway. (Also, Walter didn't request to be on the list in the first place.) -1

Second, Todd Clark is getting a vertical JAMMA cab together for Eric, so Woodpecker is being added back to the list. +1

Third, we (Eric and I) failed to post a cutoff announcement earlier when we should have, and a couple of gamers approached us about Donkey Kong 3 and Donkey Kong Junior. Since we now have multiples of both of those games on the games list we are going to add them to the record attempt area to help them out. Just saying "No" to be a hardass about deadlines runs counter to the spirit of the show, hence the change. +2

So the final count is seventeen (17) games in the record attempt area, assuming all of the pledged games show up.

Also, please note that the games in the record attempt area are not off limits to the public. Each game in this area was requested by somebody who wants to make attempts on it and we will accommodate them and anyone else as best we can. When a game is not in use for a record attempt it is open to anyone who wants to play. Also, we'd love nothing more than to see an unknown walk out of the crowd and put up a huge score and even take down a world record. That is essentially what happened two years ago when Jesse Corrington blew everyone's minds on Vs. Excitebike for several hours.

Thanks all.

A reminder for the world record attempts at the 2011 NW Pinball and GameRoom Show in Seattle next weekend... To our knowledge we will have no referees from any score keeping entity at the show who can verify your scores live. This is definitely true of Twin Galaxies (who charges exorbitant fees for their services). Walter Day will be at our event but he is no longer part of Twin Galaxies and can no longer act as a referee for them.

This means each gamer who is doing record attempts needs to record their performances for later submission and is responsible for providing their own video recording equipment to do so, in addition to following any submissions guidelines for the score keeping entity to which they wish to submit their performance(s).

Eric Akeson and I will be assisting the gamers by ensuring that the games are on the correct settings for what the gamer wants to do (default/marathon settings vs. TGTS/TGES, etc.) and by helping gamers with their recording process to ensure it is adequate. This includes unbroken recording of the entire game play, end of game, entering of player's initials, opening the backs of the game cabinets and filming dip switch settings, etc., a full attract mode cycle, and ending with a power off/on cycle, all while keeping the game cabinet in frame. Basically the video camera must be the absent referee's eyes and ears.

Eric and I will both have our video cameras there, but do not count on being able to use them. With seventeen games in the record attempt area it simply will be impossible for us to provide recording service for every gamer. Come prepared with your own recording equipment and whatever else you need (extension cord, UPS, etc.).

A reminder for the world record attempts at the 2011 NW Pinball and GameRoom Show in Seattle next weekend...

Its not next weekend, its the weekend after that, correct? IE, not this weekend, but next? err... nevermind...

Don't be moving the time forward, I am still repairing games for the show.

That's what I'm saying... from the original post, it sounded like it was this coming up weekend... I still have a ton of work to do.

One correction... We will have a referee at the Seattle show from one of the major score tracking organizations after all. :)

Ken House (KLOV member 'AtHomeTech') shared this on the SMAC group earlier today:

"I will be there for most of the event and have full authority to take scores to add to the AURCADE database. This will not get your score into the 'TwinGalaxies' database but it WILL get your score verified by a recognized gaming authority and add all the legitimacy it needs to be official. For TwinGalaxies scores you will need follow their recording and submission guidelines."

Thanks Ken!
