World Record Attempts List Finalized for 2011 NW Pinball and GameRoom Show
Eric Akeson asked me earlier today (and I was out for a bit and just got home) to post an announcement that the world record attempts list for the 2011 NW Pinball and GameRoom Show is now full, and the request lines are now closed.
This is the latest we've ever extended the deadline for record attempt requests. With the show only three weeks away we have our hands full ensuring that 1) all of the requested games are available from the local collector community, 2) they can pass muster with standard score submissions processes and rules, such as the right ROM set revision, etc., 3) are in good working order, and 4) that they are definitely coming to the show. That's a lot to accomplish in the short time frame that is left. Also, the show's logistics team needs sufficient time to plan and finalize truck routes for games pickup, and in order to facilitate that the cutoff date for submitting any new games to the show will be May 20-ish, which is only a week away, and that's only two weeks before showtime. Record attempt games need a longer lead time to ensure all of the above happens.

After two months of fielding requests we have a record number of world record attempts happening at the show this year and cannot accommodate any more machines or players. Barring any unforeseen circumstances we are going to have fourteen (14) machines in the high score area of the show. Typically we have no more than ten (10) maximum, and in past years 3-4 of them ended up not being used whereas this year that does not appear to be the case. Also, we need to leave sufficient room around each game cabinet for camcorder setups, in addition to adequate room to maneuver around each cabinet to get into the back doors and film dip switch settings, etc. And all of this happens while 3000 members of the general public fill the rooms to play over 350 arcade video games and pinball machines. It's gonna be nuts!
As a reminder, there will be no official referees for any score keeping entity at the show. Eric Akeson will be overseeing the record attempt area and assisting with game preparation before attempts to ensure correct settings, etc. (Twin Galaxies' rules are typically the standard bearer here) as well as assisting with recording setups. I will be assisting Eric off and on throughout the weekend. There will be occasional "off" times for the record attempt area to allow for meals and breaks, etc. This is, after all, a social event above all else.
NOTE: It is each gamer's responsibility to provide their own video recording equipment. We will have adequate power to accommodate multiple camera setups. There may be a camcorder available for a gamer to use in the record attempt area on a first come first serve basis and if you ask nicely (Eric is bringing his setup and I am bringing mine), but this is in no way a guarantee of camcorder availability. Best to bring your own gear rather than assume you'll be able to borrow someone else's. Also, if your record attempt is expected to last more than an hour or so I'd recommend bringing a UPS battery backup with you just in case. We have never experienced a power outage at the show, nor an accidental unplugging of a game, but there can be a first time for everything. Be prepared.
Thanks to all the awesome Pacific Northwest game collectors for accommodating games requests, and good luck to everyone who will be going for record scores at the show.
