works fine with sound board disconnected Gottlieb system 80 blackhole funny issues

Symptoms Gottlieb system 80 black hole like to fail to boot up properly and come up immediately with displays on with a coil locked on and flipper power relay on as well as many other lights etc.
some times just resets and does this in middle of game.
most the time it just wont boot.
slam mod is done and work fine
voltage to cpu is good.
appears to work correctly with CPU to driver board interconnects off.

now Get THIS
When i pull the connector off the sound board, the machine works flawlessly!
tested this extensively.
i pulled the 2 fuses from front of machine that are for sound,i can leave the sound board plugged in and machine will work fine then.

Even if no one is able to help me i thought i would share this crazy experience with you guys.
Thanks!

Sounds like a classic case of the Gottlieb System 80 floating grounds.

Do the traditional mods which tie the PS ground to the various other boards, and rebuild the MPU/driver board interconnect (or buy the prebuilt one from Docent Electronics).

These used to be detailed on Clay's website, but that's gone now, so I don't know where to point you for the full instructions.

screwy things can happen when capacitors dry out/go bad

i'd repin the sound board connector and replace the capacitors on the sound card and see

I would recap all boards, do the ground mods, inspect cpu board for battery acid damage, check power supply board for cold solder joints, and repin the connectors in both the cpu to power supply harness and the cpu to driver board harness.

would some one who know please tell me wihat is on connector a3j4 on the driver board. as soon as a game starts and kick old ball back up the machine resets! wtf?
game starts ok and keep goin if a3j4 is unplugged. but can plug it back in and pklay fine till u drain ball and it trys to kick it back up and when its time to releas enext ball it dies. all the board aer tested good by swap, cpu, dirver, power supply =pcb all work fine in hh, etc.... replaced some bad looking tiny cap in bottom of cabinet... no change... have even all fuses pulled incluided main controoler solenoid fuse, and as soon as it is time to rest drop target banks and let new ball out game resets.....
i i am checking the linear power supply correctly the 2, 8 vlt lines are like 30 some odd volts now!!! wtf. help , comments?

A3J4 on the driver board is for all 4 drop target bank and outhole solenoids. If the boards test fine in another game, then you either have bad connections causing too much power draw, or possibly bad coil/diode causing reset.

Cool tech info! Rep for you when I get on real pc at home!
Questions, there are a lot of grounds there. Should I try tying all the green wires together near connector? I think they goto bottom of cabinet and through and old molex again, maybe tie them together there?
If coil fires its test good right? Diodes on the coild or a way to find which djode it uses in the diode holder board arrays?

I repd him since I wanna see this working so I can play too lol

it wont be too long, it like partially works lool!!!

just tied all the grounds in the bottom together before molex connectors! was hard and a lil sloppy, though not technically ahrd to understand to do actualls geting all 20 some wires soldered together can be alotta greef!!!!

so far so good, game si running good again, know what that means right? time to sell it ahhaaha!!!!!

can some one tell me what all the pin out on the sound board connector are for/labled as, i have a pin out in manula for schematic but it doesint seem right i think it is for the non talking version. also in the bottom of my cab it show 24volts dc for sound? i wonder if my mahcine shipped with non talking board and was upgraded later, kinda seems like its possible... there are instuctions in the manual for switching between the 2
