Why is it that everytime you help someone out by working on their machine, you run into more problems than you bargain for?

I helped out a fellow car show enthusiast with his bally strikes n spares today. He has had it several years and the kicker rubbers broke, so he asked me if I would replace them. I go there and there was more stuff hacked on that machine then I've ever seen before.
Long story short, I was there for 4 hours getting it back into shape. He could not believe how much better it played after cleaning, waxing, switch adjustments etc. This guy knew nothing about the machine other than it was fun to play. With all that was wrong with it, I don't know how it would have been fun to play.

Has anyone else encountered more problems than you had expected?

I'm still working through all the issues I discovered with 8 cabs at once. I'm down to 2 with 'minor' issues at this point. But yeah, there always seems to be more under the surface.

In my case....

its more like blind leading the blind.

I am at a point where I'm nervous setting up or helping a friend get a game because it seems that I will be on call to fix it!

Also, whats up with no one around me having none or few tools? And to add, me buying replacement parts and just basic things like fuses, wire, electrical tape, etc.

Another pet pieve that also ties into my obsession with 2 wheeled scoots is similiar with tools, parts, and my time.
When I lend a tool out - it does not easily "find" its way or home, or my most recent grpphhh was when someone borrowed drill and diamond bit - broke both....dont know what the hell he was trying to drill....and he wanted me to call him when I got a new set for him to use!

Guess this hit a nerve spot just now!

I hate loaning tools, I never borrow either. That said i buy the tools I need which makes me the guys everyone calls to borrow. The I am a jerk when I say no.

I buy high end tools so I know I will never have to buy it again. I have a $400 roofing gun, it has roofed 3 houses and I have yet to use it. That was when I realized I need to quit loaning.

Maybe some freeloaders ought to buy their own shit.

I live in a small town so people hear who they can borrow from, don't get me wrong my buddies can use what ever they want, no questions asked.

It's always Pandora's box when you work on someone's machine. It never ceases to amaze me how many things can be broken / missing and people just don't realize. Things like balls getting stuck in a scoop and having to wait for the ball search and the owner doesn't realize it shouldn't do that, loose flippers are pretty typical too. I picked up a game a few months back, flipper messed up, almost all the bulbs out, missing / broken rubbers, 8-10 bad switches and the guy thought it played great. To a lot of people if it hits the ball around it does all it needs to do.
